Here`s a good "how to" video... ( YouTube - How to Clay Bar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfEfLGL59GI&NR=1) ).

Look through this thread for lots of good info as well... ( http://www.autopia.org/forum/car-detailing/108836-helpful-threads-newbies.html ).

Since clay is non abrasive, direction doesn`t matter. Just make sure you use enough clay lube.

I think he did...but he`s wrong. In some cases clay can be very aggressive. Depends on which kind you buy they make all sorts from aggressive to ultra fine. But for me direction doesnt really matter. The only tip I can give is do the dirtiest parts last like the lower panels that have more junk.

You don`t have to create a new thread for the same question. Just a thought.

Did you say "clay is non abrasive"?

How about if we say "certain clays, used properly, are functionally nonabrasive, whereas other clays are highly abrasive and will mar paint no matter how you use them".

And *contaminated* clay can be mighty abrasive!

But in the normal sense, detailing clay glides across the paint on (top of) a film of lube, shearing off any contamination that it bumps into.

If you`re claying (properly) with something like Sonus green Utlra-fine, it should`t matter what direction/motion you use as the clay simply should not be doing an abrasion...shouldn`t even take off an appreciable amount of wax.

But few things are perfect in life and it only takes one bit of abrasive contamination in your clay to make you wish you`d done things differently ;)

I use sonus green at almost every wash. I guess our cars get contaminated quickly. It is even advertised that it can be used at every wash.

I reused on piece of clay (about a 1/3 of a bar) for about six or seven washes. This included about three whole car clays and a scores of panels being cleaned.

Didn`t notice any extra marring from this. I wash the cars about every two weeks.

When we had a bumper repaint I did notice Sonus Green wasn`t cutting it in terms of overspray removal. But for bugs, tar and other contaminants it works great.

Same here; I`ve been spot-claying as needed at every wash since detailing clays first came out back in the `90s.
