So today I detailed an 02 blue BMW 540i and while doing my correction I realized that it needed two hits of 3m rubbing compound to get it 95% clear. I did take pictures but my befores aren`t that great, but maybe I`ll post em later. Anyway, tomorrow I am scheduled to work on an 07 BMW 335 hard top convertible and I was wondering how hard that paint is? Is it equally hard as the 540 paint of softer? :think2

I`ve always found BMW paint to be on the softer side.

+1 especially the black.

Depends if its metallic paint or non-metallic. My non-metallic Jet Black BMW has a reputation of being soft, AFAIK.

Paint hardness varies by color and year.

Yeah, it varies. The clear on my `97 is harder than that on my Audis.

Jet black (non metalic) is soft.
Black saphire (metalic) is hard.

My 97 e39 540 is black and it`s very hard. I had to use 3m rubbing compound as well.

As a general rule of thumb their solid colors are softer than their metallics.
I`ve noticed their metallics take much more agressive measures to remove defects than the solid colors, FWIW.
