I work at a shop and we offer a headlight correction service. We use the 3M kit. It includes 500, 800, 1000, 3000, plastic polish, plastic cleaner, compounding pad, glazing pad.

I havnt been trained by my work (yet) but i`ve done 4 of them already using my knowledge of paint correction and some headlight restoration that i`ve picked up reading here and MOL.

I just want to know if my process is correct by autopian standards. I`m mostly concerned about when to use the DA and when to use the rotary. The rotary SEEMS to spin slower than the DA judging by how loud it is when being used. I noticed both of them leave the plastic warm to the touch.

1) 500 grit using 3" pneumatic DA

2) 800 grit ----------------------

3) 1000 --------------------------

4) 3000 --------------------------

5) Plastic polish on compounding pad using 3" pneumatic rotary

6) Plastic cleaner on glazeing pad using 3" pneumatic DA

Pretty much any sand, buff and polish will clean up headlights and make them look crystal clear....for a while. Unless you WANT customers coming back to you in a few months with cloudy headlights again, you must apply a new UV cured coating onto the lense. There are TONS of headlight restoration products out there, but not many that actually are long term. I have tried 3 systems and none worked until I I tried Renu-lite. I have been using this system for over 2 years and have NEVER had to redo any headlights.

Those Honda headlights looks great. The look alone should answer your question. If not, yes, your process looks fine. Like detailingnmore said, though, they will oxydize again quite quickly if not protected.

detailingnmore: Where is Renu-lite available for sale? I could not find that info on their website. Thanks.

What does anybody else use as a coating for headlights?

RenuLite doesn`t appear to be easily available.

Do you have pics of the results?

Do you have to do the wetsanding/prep typical of a headlight restoration, then put on the Renu-lite at the end like a clear coat?

Results in the photos don`t look much different than other methods, but the key for a permanent solution is the coating. Also, you can see a video of our process with the Renulite here:

Yes, you do need to wet sand.
