I guess the question is WHY do you want to explain what detailing is? Are you trying to sell them your service?

When people ask me what detailing is, I tell them it`s trying to restore the car to as near to new condition as possible. And there are levels of that. Wash and Wax wouldn`t get most cars anywhere near new condition, but it`s a start in the right direction. At the other extreme, you can start removing trim, bumpers, seats, etc. to prepare a car for a show. That is the other end of the spectrum.

If it`s just a Joe Blow on the street and they think a wash and wax is a detail, then no harm in letting them.

Thanks Scoach when a few potential customer see my name they ask how much is a detail or give me a detail when they see a price list then the answer becomes I thought a wash and wax was a detail (Simoniz),lol
