View Full Version : Sealing the cladding?

Hi, guys. My wife and I just purchased a Honda CR-V this weekend, and I spent all day yesterday working on it. This morning I just applied a coat of Ultima Paint Guard Plus to the painted surfaces. But I have not yet sealed the black cladding (is that the right word?)--I`m referring to the front and rear bumpers and the plastic side rocker panels.

Should I go ahead and seal these with the UPGP? My alternative is 303 Protectant, of which I also have a bottle.

Thanks for your counsel.

Cheers,

Al

Try 303 Protectant.

akimel- Can`t help as I`ve never used the UPGP, but you can guess what my answer would be with a few other LSPs ;)

I simply never use stuff like 303 on such surfaces unless they simply won`t respond to an LSP-based approach. Frequent redos, running in the rain, dirt retention...yuck.

Of all the products I have used on black pebbled plastic on the exterior of a vehicle the product I forever go back to is Poorboy`s Trim Restorer. I have used Meg`s products plus most of the water-based protectants such as 303 but the most durable seems to be the Poorboy`s product.

Try the UPGP. It`s worth a shot. If that doesn`t work well, I`ve had the best luck with Werkstat Satin Prot. Tried many others. 303 is lousy on the exterior, as are most other dressings.

I have used Z2 to seal hard platics before. For hard platic that is already faded & dry, go with 303 or similar.

On plastic boy cladding, like my wife` 2002 Ford Escape, and on textured black trim, like around the mirror housings on my 2005 Mercury Montego, I`ve had good luck with both of these two:

Black WOW Exterior Trim Restorer (http://www.autogeek.net/black-wow-trim-restorer.html)

and

Meguiars Gold Class Trim Detailer for plastic & rubber exterior trim pieces and moldings. (http://www.autogeek.net/megocltrde.html)

It`s been a month since I`ve used both of them on both our cars, and it`s still glossy and beading water.

If you like UPGP, give the Ultima Tire and Trim Guard Plus a try. My gf has an older Subaru Forester, and everything below the belt-line on that mini-suv is plastic cladding. I treated it with original version of UTTGP, and the cladding looked awesome (and beaded water) for a good six months. Next time, I`m using a PC and 4" pad to apply to the Forester, though . . . half the car is plastic (and I`m inherently lazy).

I decided to seal the cladding with the UPGP, and it looks fine. UPGP is so very easy, and it`s nice only have to use one product for both paint and cladding.

Thanks, Tort, for the suggestion about the Ultima Tire and Trim Guard. I will definitely consider it.
