very tempting.... i`m still looking into threads to try to figure out the pros/cons of this model.

it can read aluminum AND steel and has a low price, but can`t switch easily from microns to mils, and comes set in mils. personally i think i would prefer micron readings

The original version seems pretty popular around here but I haven`t heard much about the newer model.

What seems strange to me is that the newer model is cheaper than the old model. Normally when a company releases a new product they will discount the old version to clear the stock. But they are still selling the older model at a higher price. Does this mean the old model is better than the new one?

Anybody have any info on this?

When I looked at their site about a week or so ago, the new unit was either $225 or $245 and not with free shipping... now it`s $199 w/ free shipping... maybe they`re just trying to get sales going on the new unit...? I`m ordering one now anyway but would like to see if anyone knows about the price reduction.

EDIT: Anyone with some experience with this gauge and how it compares to the Highline... Coating Thickness Gages from Phase 2+ & Gaging.com (http://www.gaging.com/phase1.htm) ?

Ok fellas, I just called and got some good information. Talked to a sales rep who seemed to know what he was talking about and was very informed on the products he was selling and how they stack up with the competition.

Both models can be switched from microns to mils with the press of a button. The newer model only takes one AAA vs four, but the word still isn`t out on battery life (of course without a battery sucking backlight, it should be pretty good, and its only 1 friggin battery...). A probe isn`t available, and I think between not having the backlight display or a probe is in part of how prices are kept down.

I just ordered mine, and will be doing a local pick-up (they`re only 15 minutes away: when i went to call I laughed to see it`s the same area code as mine) either today or tomorrow.

Marc :)
