The dry ice method may work on some type of dents. The bad thing is I have seen it crack paint and even delaminate paint. i would nor recommend it.
The dent you have pictured would be a tough repair. Even a seasoned pro probably couldn`t repair it 100%.
If your happy with your own repair that is great.
I have been repairing dents for ten years now and can tell when a customer has tried to repair it them self. Usually when we come across this situation it makes the repair more difficult and usually cost the customer more.

Did you use the hair dryer and compressed air duster?

Yeah, but before that used dry ice, and before that used a hairdryer and a hammer...
I plan on removing the fender, heating, rolling it into shape again, then reinforcing and possibly fixing paint.
Better than a $1400 fix...especially for a poor college student.
