hi i was looking into buying a PC, ive looked on ebay and found the ones where its just the machine for like 116 dollars Porter-Cable 7424 6" VS Random Orbit Polisher Buffer - eBay (item 310117672397 end time Feb-21-09 15:57:47 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/Porter-Cable-7424-6-VS-Random-Orbit-Polisher-Buffer_W0QQitemZ310117672397QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBuf fers_Polishers)

but thats without pads and back plating and stuff. i was wondering if i could just buy a few bonnets and fit it on that PC in that link or would i need to buy back plating and then use the bonnet. im just looking into detailing my own car, very basic stuff but i want the best quality i can get for the cheapest price.

are pads also better?

Pads are better. You get more versatility with pads. Different pads have different uses, orange and white for polishing, red, gray, and blue for waxes, glazes and other last step products. With the PC you should get the 5 inch or smaller backing plate and use the 5.5 inch pads or smaller.

I`d really suggest that if you want the PC save up some more and get on of the prepackaged deals from one of the autopia sponsored vendors.

Good luck,

i was just wondering if you could just slap a bonnett on the PC in that link and be ready to go, because i only need it to apply a polish and wax.

Yes you can put a bonnet on the foam pad without purchasing a backing plate. I`d still advise that you invest in the backing plate and some pads. You`ll get better results with polishing.

I am a long time car washer but a rookie detailer enthusiast. I received the 7424 for Christmas and waxed one car with it and polished and waxed another. Here is my $.02

It is not powerful enough to be used with 6" pads. I wound up buying a 3-1/2" backing plate and 4" pads and I still prefer to apply and remove wax by hand.

The 7424 with 4" pads is better for polishing than doing it by hand.

If you are going to polish more than a few times I would suggest the UDM or another machine with more power. If you are going to polish only once or twice I would SERIOUSLY suggest paying a professional to correct your paint then you wash, clay, wax, etc. the Autopian way.

I would keep looking for better prices, they do happen from time to time. Here is the proof. http://www.autopia.org/forum/good-deals/83446-need-porter-cable-7336sp-maybe-i-can-help.html

I am not a fan of adapters on BP`s

a PC has a good amout of vibration and that is just asking for trouble

im also intersted in the 4 inch pads. Where do I get the counter weight? Is it really worth all the hassle? There are only two weights available for the PC, a 5" or a 6" weight. When you take off your BP (backing plate) the weight will be marked for use with a 5" or 6" BP.

In my experience the counterweight doesn`t make much difference, but since they are cheap you can buy the size yours doesn`t have for ~ $3.00 if you want to give it a try:
