View Full Version : Factory clear won`t buff out?

My new honda bike has swirl marks. I did a lot of research, and used my repainted truck as a test, with a Porter Cable DA, all the right pads, and Mequiar`s (sp) Swirl remover #9. It completely took the swirls out of my truck. So I tried the motorcycle. It did not work. Instead it just made the swirl scratches finer, but spread over a bigger area. I did the bike by hand.

Somebody told me the refinish clear is softer, but the factory Honda clear is a complicated baked on, chemical catalyzed, very hard clear, and one can not "buff out" swirl marks.

Is this true?

Thanks for any help. I love my bike and this is really making me unhappy.

Naw. #9 has diminishing abrasives, which need to be fully broken down to create a swirl-free finish. Hand application didn`t totally break it down, so the remaining large abrasive particles induced new swirling.

Pick up a 4" backing plate and pads and go to town on the bike - the results should be very similar to the truck.

Thanks. I`m bleeding green, would the 6" work as well?

So you think I should just go at it more with the Meguiar`s #9?

Thanks

Jim

The 6" has not so much cutting power on a DA polisher as a 4`` pad...Also it will help you more because of the small surface on the bike....I wonder how Honda made a hard CC....All the Honda cars that i have done until now they had a softer than soft CC : )

As for the #9 i didn`t try it yet...

I have never had any problems getting swirls out of my 98` Smokin` Joe`s Honda.

I had an `05 600rr (Black/Tribal) and it was the softest paint I have ever seen. Wiping it with a fresh microfiber would put `rainbow` like marring into the paint.

Maybe the paint is too soft for using #9???So you add instead of removing the swirls??

Usually a finishing polish and a polishing pad is more than enough on Honda paint...Some times i have to follow with a finishing polish and finishing pad to get a swirl free paint....

Thanks. Can you suggest a finishing polish?

For quick wipe downs, I always used Plexus...on the metal, wheels, and plastics.

I use Menzerna 85RD or 106FA.Both are finishing polishes, the 85RD is the light cutting one....

Thank you. Do you use those by hand, DA, or rotary?

Thanks.

I use them mostly by a DA polisher.....
