View Full Version : Why do GM wheels seem to etch easy?

I have noticed that GM alloy rims that are clearcoated seem to etch easy.

I have seen many new GM trucks and suv`s still on the dealer lot with their rims starting to have etching streaks under the clearcoat.

What causes this? Is there anything that will remove it or stop the spread of the etching?

I always thought it was from owners using acid based wheel cleaners and the acid gets under the clearcoat, but how does it start to form when the vehicle is still new on the dealer lot?

Thanks

The dealers clean the vehicles on the lot all the time. If those vehicles are driven on test drives, the lot jockeys probably hit them with acid wheel cleaner when they wash them.
