History

This ZR-1 Corvette is 1 of only 245 40th Anniversary Edition Ruby Red ZR-1`s that were produced. For 1993, Corvette marked its 40th Anniversary with a special appearance package that included an exclusive "Ruby Red" exterior and interior with color-keyed wheel centers, headrest embroidery and bright emblems on the hood, deck and side-gills. All together, a total of 448 ZR-1`s were sold in 1993. The ZR-1`s 5.7-liter LT5 V-8 was upgraded this year and featured significant power increases from 375 hp to 405 hp! Many people refer to the ZR-1 Corvette as "The King of the Hill".

Consultation

I was contacted by the proud new owner of this authentic ZR-1 Corvette after he had viewed my detailing portfolio online. We spoke briefly on the phone and set-up an appointment to discuss his expectations for the car. Because the car is 100% original with only 22K miles on the odometer, he opted for absolute perfection. He strictly informed me to leave nothing untouched, including the engine compartment, suspension, interior and of course, the exterior. I was told to keep the car for as long as I needed to ensure the end result was nothing short of perfection. We discussed price and set-up an appointment for the following week. Being a Corvette enthusiast myself, meant that this car had to look as perfect as possible before leaving the shop.

Pre-treatment Inspection

Upon arrival, the car was in a very sad state. It had been stored in the previous owners garage ever since new and rarely driven over the past 15 years. The paint lacked any gloss whatsoever and was starting to oxidize. I couldn`t help but notice all of the heavy scratches that were present on just about every panel. The top surfaces had severe acid rain etching, which is very common on C4 Corvettes. After further inspection, every crack and crevice seemed to be caked with old wax and mold was beginning to grow in these areas. The interior was about the only area that was in fair condition.

This is what the car looked like ouside...

Vehicle Preparation

The first day of the detail consisted entirely of stripping the car down to remove all contaminants, including old polish & wax residue, mold, dirt, grime, grease, oil and anything else that was on the paint that could interfere with the polishing process. This step is an extremely important part of the detail and can save lots of polishing time. As soon as I began rinsing the car down, it was beading water tremendously which told me that it had been recently waxed. If the previous layer of wax is not fully removed, it creates a barrier and causes the polisher to "hydroplane" above the paint surface, making it very difficult for any defects to be removed.

I began by using an industrial strength antibacterial degreaser to strip the car free of all loose contaminants, mold and wax. I sprayed the cleaner directly onto a clean microfiber towel and scrubbed each panel thoroughly.

These pictures show how well the water was beading on the panels that have not been stripped yet...

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/rickrack/40th%20Anniversary%20ZR-1%20Corvette/ZR-1BeforePictures082.jpg

After stripping the body free of all contaminants, I used a variety of different brushes saturated with cleaner to clean inside all of the emblems, cracks, crevices, jambs, moldings, tail lights, wheels, tires, wheel wells and gaskets to remove all of the mold build-up in these areas.

The engine compartment and suspension were filthy and required extensive cleaning by hand. The engine and electronics are prone to damage if they get wet, so I was unable to use any water certain areas. I took a damp microfiber cloth saturated with degreaser and meticulously detailed the entire engine compartment, underside of the hood and all suspension components. I used a variety of different cloths, q-tips and brushes to get into the hard-to-reach areas that I wasn`t able to get by hand.

After the engine compartment was clean and the body was stripped of loose contaminants, I soaked the car in foam and let sit for about two minutes and rinsed.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/rickrack/40th%20Anniversary%20ZR-1%20Corvette/G37-ZR-1296.jpg

I washed the entire car by hand again to remove any leftover residue that may have been leftover from the degreaser. While the car was still soapy, I clayed the entire exterior to remove any bonded contaminants from the surface and rinsed thoroughly.

I pulled the car back into the shop, dried the exterior and wiped the engine compartment & jambs dry with a clean microfiber towel. I then worked my way around the entire vehicle, wiping every panel with 91% alcohol to ensure each panel was 100% clean.

Wetsanding & Compounding

My goal on the second day was to remove as many of the heavy scratches as possible. The car had tons of heavy scratches which were extremely deep and I questioned myself if they could be safely removed. I knew wetsanding would be necessary, so I pre-soaked several sheets of 2500 and 3000 grit Meguiar`s Uni-Grit wetsand paper in a wash bucket, with soapy water for lube. The wetsanding sheets create much finer sanding scratches if the sheets are pre-soaked for about 30 minutes prior to using.

While the sandpaper was soaking, I thoroughly inspected each panel and noted any troubled areas. Corvette`s are known for having extremely hard paint, but tend to have thin edges that burn very easy. Despite the condition of this particular car, it is actually the only C4 Corvette I have ever seen without burnt edges. This is probably because the car has never been machine polished before. I carefully taped each edge to ensure I did not remove any paint from the edges. All other delicate parts of the car were masked off as well.

Now that the wetsand paper had soaked, It was time to start wetsanding to see what I was up against. I started at the rear of the car since it was the worst. I used 2500 grit paper to start, followed by 3000 grit. I did not want to remove too much clear when wetsanding, so I only sanded the areas lightly. Some of the scratches were still visible after sanding, but I knew I could go back and do additional sanding if necessary. After each scratch was carefully wetsanded, I pulled out my Makita polisher and compounded the area with 3M Extra-Cut Compound (#06060) using a Shleigel twisted wool pad. Some of the scratches remained, but I slowly and patiently massaged out the scratches with the 3M ECC / wool pad combo. Some of the deeper scratched areas took nearly 12 passes until they were no longer visible and I was able to achieve 99% + correction on this area.

Now that I had successfully removed all scratches from the rear bumper, I moved on to the lower panels behind the rear wheels, which take the most abuse from rocks, sand etc..

After hours of wetsanding and compounding, I decided to call it a day and packed up for the night.

More Wetsanding & Compounding

Day 3 consisted of more wetsanding on various panels of the car. After all of the wetsanding was complete, most of the major scratches were fully removed besides a few that required touch-up paint (which would be done later).

Before I called it quits for the day, I chose a test panel to try some different product/pad combos on to decide what combo worked the best. After testing various compounds, I decided to stick with the 3M Extra-Cut Compound and twisted wool pad. It is a very aggressive combo, but the paint was fairly hard and it had lots of pitting, etching, swirls, bird etchings, etc

Test panel...

Heavy Compounding

Day 4 consisted of compounding the entire exterior with Extra-Cut Compound using a twisted wool pad to level the paint and remove all moderate defects. Compounding is the most important step in the paint correction process, so I carefully inspected each panel immediately after it was complete by wiping with 91% alcohol on a clean microfiber towel to ensure that no filling was taking place. This combo is extremely aggressive, so the utmost care was taken to ensure that little or no paint as was removed. All edges were taped, removed, retaped, over and over as I went along to prevent burning the edges. After this step was completed, I wiped down each panel with a damp cloth, followed by 91% alcohol to remove any remaining residue from compounding. The finish was perfectly scoured from the wool pad and it was ready to begin refining back to a high gloss.

Medium Polish

The goal of day 5 was to start refining the finish to remove the heavy compounding haze and wool pad abrasions left from the previous polishing step. First, I decided to break things up a little and refinish the mufflers which were starting to flake. It is a very common trait on C4 Corvette`s for the exhaust to start flaking off paint.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/rickrack/40th%20Anniversary%20ZR-1%20Corvette/9340thAnnivZR-1Corvette002.jpg

I cleaned each muffler with degreaser and sanded each one with 1200 grit sandpaper. After both mufflers were sanded down, I wiped them down with prep-solvent to remove any silicone or wax that may have been present to ensure a perfect surface for the paint to bond. Each muffler was carefully masked off and received 3 coats of hi-temperature paint.

Here is a picture after the first coat...

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/rickrack/40th%20Anniversary%20ZR-1%20Corvette/9340thAnnivZR-1Corvette003.jpg

After the paint was dry, I looked through my arsenal of products to decide what would be used to refine the paint surface back to a high gloss. I tried a variety of different products on various foam pads to remove the compounding haze, but a more aggressive approach was necessary. Next, I tried using a black lambs wool pad (Thanks David Fermani!) with different polishes until I found the perfect combo to fully remove the scratches.

After trying my go-to products with unsatisfactory results, I tried Mark V Uno, which worked perfectly and gave me the results I was looking for. This product does have slight filling abilities due to the lubricating oils, so each panel was wiped several times with 91% alcohol to ensure that absolutely no filling was taking place. Uno left a surprisingly great finish and removed the compounding haze & wool pad abrasions beautifully.

Next, I polished the complete exterior with Menzerna Super Intensive Polish , which really amplified the gloss and prepped the surface for the final polishing step and burnishing stage.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/rickrack/40th%20Anniversary%20ZR-1%20Corvette/cooltext398058912.gif

Final Polish / Burnishing

My expectations for day 6 was to finish up all of the polishing and detail the interior. I polished the drivers rear quarter panel with 106fa using a black CCS pad, wiped it down with 91% alcohol and pulled it out into the direct sun to inspect from buffer trails and hologramming before continuing to polish the rest of the car. The finish looked perfect in the sunlight, so I pulled the car back into the shop.

Before proceeding with the final polishing step, I removed all of the tape and decided to give the car a much needed wash to remove the product spatter and dust from all of the cracks and crevices. It is very important to wash the car before the final polishing step to ensure that all of the tiny dust particles and abrasives from the compound have been removed. If even the tiniest dust particle gets into your pad when polishing, you risk marring the surface and take a huge step backward. I rinsed the car off very well and filled a wash bucket with a fresh batch of soap. I used a brand new microfiber towel to wash the car with and took my time getting in every little nook and cranny, including the door, hood and hatch jambs. I dried the car carefully by blotting the surface dry with another clean microfiber towel and wiped all door, hood and hatch jambs dry.

For the interior, I shampooed all of the carpets by hand using Folex carpet cleaner. All carpets and floor mats were agitated with a stiff bristle brush and vacuumed dry. The interior vinyl and leather was cleaned with Kar Kraft`s Super Kleen cleaner, spraying the cleaner onto a damp microfiber towel and wiping dry with a 2nd cloth. A variety of different brushes were used to get into all of the vents, cupholders, gauges, etc.. After the seats and interior panels were clean, I applied Zaino Leather In A Bottle to both seats using a microfiber towel and treated all other interior pieces with Meguiar`s Quick Interior Detailer for its UV protection. I gave the interior a final vacuum, installed the floor mats and cleaned all windows, instrument cluster & mirrors.

After the interior was complete, I re-taped all necessary areas and began polishing the exterior with 106fa using a black CCS pad. Each panel was polished twice using extensive finishing techniques and wiped immediately after with 91% alcohol. I inspected each panel under 1500 watt halogen and dual xenon light sources for any imperfections that may have been present. After the polishing was complete and all panels were inspected, I did a final burnishing step using Menzerna 85rd on a blue CCS foam finishing pad and called it quits for the day.

Me polishing with 106fa...

Protection

Since the majority of the vehicle had been extensively polished by machine, it was time to go back and polish the hard-to-reach areas by hand. All the hard-to-reach areas (emblems, door jambs, hood jambs, hatch jambs, headlights, etc.) were polished with Meguiar`s 105, followed by Menzerna 106fa using a microfiber applicator and then sealed with Zaino All In One.

Before any wax or sealant was applied to the paint surface, I went around the entire vehicle using an artists brush to apply 2-3 coats of factory touch-up paint to all stone chips and other tiny imperfections that were not able to be buffed out.

For maximum protection, durability and intense gloss, I decided to use Zaino Z5 as my LSP of choice. Before applying the Z5, I wiped down all exterior surfaces with Zaino Z6, which ensures a perfect foundation for the Z5 to molecularly bond and cross-link.

ZFX flash cure accelerator was added to the Z5 because multiple coats would be applied. ZFX is a cross-linking and acceleration additive which offers almost instant cure time and improves bonding to both paint and additional layers of Z5.

A thin coat of ZFX enabled Z5 was applied to all exterior surfaces by hand. While waiting for the Z5 to dry, I dressed all tires and wheel wells with Kar Kraft Super Blue dressing. After about 20 minutes, I removed the Z5 using a new microfiber towel and sprayed each panel with a light mist of Z6 to buff away any remaining residue and enhance gloss. A total of 3 coats were applied, with an application of Z6 in between each layer.

The original wheels were in good shape, but needed a light polishing to bring back the original luster. I machine polished all of the wheels with Menzerna 106ff and followed behind by hand using Zaino All in One, followed by an application of Optimum Opti-Seal.
