View Full Version : Can this be fixed? Attempted to touch up chipped paint...

I opened my door too fast a while back and ended up hitting a pole. A tiny bit of paint chipped off and I was left with a fingernail sized dent. I was pissed and tried to fix it with touch up paint and wet sanding. I`m pretty sure I just added to the problem. Check out the pictures. Those are after trying to touch up with paint, wet sand, and wax/polish. Is it possible to fix this without having to repaint the entire door? The area is dull compared to the other paint. I probably went too far down through the clear coat. I`d be willing to bet that matching Alpine Silver is costly and I`m in no position for an entire repaint to have all the panels match perfectly. Can this be professionally wet sanded and buffed out somehow? What would you guys do?

On my car, I would take it to a pro and have it fixed right. But depending on the make, model and what you use it for you`ll have to decide.

If you don`t know what you`re doing, then you`re only gonna make it worse. Take it to a pro and tell them to color match and repaint that section only.

It needs to be sanded down, primed and painted complete. The quarter panel also

need to be painted (color blended into and the entire panel clear coated like the door).

Door handle, mouldings, mirrors and other items generally are removed.

This would be doing it correctly. Professionally. Anything short of that is temporary.

how about door edge guards? many makes come from the factory with them. (even body colored).

I`ve been in the same situation more than once. As a matter of fact many times. If you are a perfectionist and appears that you are, you are basically screwed for a perfect fix. Where you are now you will need to have the door refinished as suggested above and then your chances of a perfect paint match are "iffy". Silver metallic a real son-of-a-gun.

Find a quality body shop -- one that does customs or restorations and be ready to part with some bucks. Otherwise "suck it up" and be ready for less than perfection.

Sorry.

a buddy of mine was showing me his rear quarter panel that had recently been dented in by a hit and run. He took it to a guy he knows and had it pulled out and blended. The entire panel was not painted, just the area that was hit. I could not see any lines or blend areas. I was in shock at how awesome it looked. I actually thought for a moment if he was lying about even getting hit because it really didn`t look like the panel was touched at all.

I`m going to get a quote on a touch-up and see what my options are. I`ll be sure to post pics after the whole deal.

btw, in the 1st photo that big black blur is part of the shadow on the picture. the actual damage is at the very side of the door, shown on the last 3 pics.

I found a very small dent in my wifes` Tacoma pickup in approximately the same location as the dent in your door. It is not too close to the door edge so I`ll be headed to detail shop in my area that does paintless dent removal. Depending on the actual location of the dent in your door, you might have been able to do the same. Remove the dent and if there is a small chip, apply just a bit of touchup paint and then level it with a very fine sanding block from Meguiar`s.

I know that it is too late to have that done now (but maybe not). Something to think about when it happens again.
