Hello all...I am a long time lurker, but this is my first post. I have a 1996 VW GTI, and this is on the roof of the car. Does this look like oxidation or clear coat failure? Can this be fixed without a respray? If so what do you recommend. Do I need a machine, or can it be done by hand? Thanks! Tim

Failure looks like the answer.

That is clearcoat failure. 4 out of 5 detailers recommend getting it repainted! :D

I don`t know, for me I would guess it`s oxidation on a single stage paint. I know Porsche was still using some SS paints back in those years so it wouldn`t surprise me one bit if other German manufacturers were also.

Clear Coat failure typically looks like a clear skin peeling off the paint, much like after a bad sunburn.

I`d bet a good rotary polishing by a qualified pro detailer could clean that up pretty nicely for much less then the cost of a respray.

After a closer look, I guess it does look like there is some sort of peeling in those pics.....
