What is the name....?

Hello, I was an Autopia member back in 2004 and have just returned (under a new name). Can someone help me with a quick question. What is the name of the piece of equipment that is used to determine the thickness of the paint? I recall this device can be used to determine if someone has "burned through" the clear coat. Any help would be appreciated. :nixweiss

Thanks. He was more worried that his clear coat has been "compromised". A body shop "fixed" a key scratch in his door and he believes that when they buffed his car afterwards, they burnt through his clear coat. Thank you for your help in such a timely manner.
