Hello.

I purchased a use Subaru WRX yesterday. The car is an ’02 and the owner claims the marks on the hood are from 4 year old tree sap. The hood has the highest concentration with the fenders also having a mark or two. I imagine these can’t be helped at this point, and the paint is just damaged beyond repair, but I figured I would at least ask if anyone had any opinions on how I could attempt to repair this.

The car is platinum silver metallic (silver) and the sap marks are a white color. The paint really doesn’t feel raised much so I imagine there is nothing I can do to correct these.

Thanks in advance!

Tree sap can be very corrosive. Is it possible to post some pictures? It may be possible to polish and/or wetsand the the damage, but it is hard to say without pictures.

I had some old tree sap on the roof of my past truck. I tried everything to get it off. I ended up using a plastic razor blade and doing the best I could, then buffed the area. It wasn`t 100% perfect but I wasn`t too worried since it was on the roof.

As Brad said tree sap will eat thru the paint. You might be able to improve the appearance with some wetsanding and polishing.

i tried some bug and tar remover but had no luck. the sap is raised a bit above the paint and very rough feeling compared to the paint when you run your hand over it.

You can see some sap on the headlight too.

I think with those, a repaint is in order. I don`t even think a wetsand will help that.

^they are raised a bit though, so im thinking I can make them look better somehow

I`d try 1 spot with some sandpaper and see what happens...

Chances are you will need to repaint. Wet sanding is certianly worth a shot as you are not goin to make it any worst.

Possibly try and heat up the sap spots, then use some tarminator/4*Citrus/Autglym Tar. Follow that with some strong AIO Duragloss Marine AIO/KAIO/ZAIO/OPS.
