In these pads:
ExcelErasure Sampler Kit (Red, white out of stock) (http://www.prestostore.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?ref=exceldetail&ct=65768&pd=287485)
and these:
Lake Country CCS 7.5" Pads (http://www.topoftheline.com/lake-country-pads-ccs.html)
Why do some have holes and some not?

The CCS have dimples...
Nah, I think CCS are easier to control and cut better. But you just gotta read up on them.

I think the Erasure pads are made by LC. The ccs pads offer longer working time.

excel are 6.5"s and ccs are 7.5"s
I remember using a black 3M waffle pad, it was a very well made pad. I believe it was light polish or finishing pad, as I remember it was pretty soft. I wish these pads came in a nice selection. The backing on this 3M pad was superb. Better then any backing I have ever seen.
I have grown to like meguire`s 8006 polishing pad with my PC over the years.
being that I just picked up a Dewalt CP I am still looking for backing plate and pad setup.
I have only done one car, but I could already see I need a smaller plate and pad setup for the rotary. :nixweiss
