View Full Version : 2 products to help minimizing Brake Dust...
Just read something in the Chicago Tribune regarding a couple products to help minimize brake dust buildup.
Waxing wheels can prevent brake dust-up -- chicagotribune.com (http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/chi-motormouth_tran_10-14oct14,0,775293.column)
Prestone Wheel Cleaner with Brake Dust Repellent
http://www.prestone.com/products/flash/appearance/appearance8.swf
and Automotive Barrier System from Detroit Muscle.

Has anyone had any experience with these products/companies?

the wax or sealant you use on the rest of you car will work fine
or it`s a good way to use up wax/ sealant that you don`t use on you car any more
sorry have not used those products

The article say use a carnuaba wax. I think that`s wrong, you should use a synthetic like Meguiars NXT for your wheels. I use NXT paste and it works great on my chrome wheels. If I had more post I would put up a picture.

why?
have you tried it?
what wax did you use?
a nuba will work as good on your wheels as you paint
there are a lot of people here that use a nuba on wheels

I`ve found that durability is not a huge issue on wheels - no matter what I use, it only lasts so long (harsh environment). I really like Aquawax - because I can use it in a matter of seconds on wheels that are still wet from washing.

Why not just use brake pads that do not produce dust? Ive never seen a bit of dust with my stock mopar ceramic pads.

With the amount of heat the tires and wheels generate wouldn`t a sealant last longer than a carnauba? Just thinking it is the same theory on your paint where the high temperature in the sun will degrade a carnauba sooner than a sealant? Not debating look here, just durability in a more challenging environment.

I`d personally rather have less brake squeal and more brake dust, than vice versa.

no, you paint will get hotter setting in the sun then
you wheels will ever get(unless you are autocrossing)
as you drive the wheels will get a lot of air and get cooled off
also the wax is the hot sun is also just a theory if you ask me
I have a black car thet sits outside down the shore most of the summer
and have no problems with a nuba lasting several months

That`s my thinking as well. In city driving with stops and starts and no real air getting to the wheels it seem possible for the wheels to heat up. I read that most nuba waxes break down around 180 but if the wheels don`t get that hot then I stand corrected.
