View Full Version : Drove through some house paint...

Ugh. Apparently someone thought the street was a good place to get rid of some unneeded white house paint. Now it looks like Jackson Pollock painted my lower sills and quarter panels.

The little flecks come off okay if I scratch them with my fingernail, but getting rid of all of them will take months. Is there a thinner or stripper that will allow me to take off the white crap without damaging the clear coat?

The car in question is a 1996 VW Passat. Some of the paint is on the rocker sill, which has some sort of black textured (almost rubberized) product on it.

Thanks!

Have you tried claybarring it? That might get it off, since it`s relatively fresh.

Hot water and soap. Keep the area wet and let it soak it may help. Good luck...

Oil or latex based paint? WD-40 may work.

Oil or latex based paint? WD-40 may work.+1 on the WD-40..... it`s cheap and you can get it almost anywhere..... and there is always a use for the stuff around the house and car.

+2 on the WD. You would be amazed at how many things it can remove from paint. Great stuff.

Sounds like WD-40 is the consensus... I`ll give it a try tomorrow and let you know how it worked out. Thanks for the advice!

Mineral spirits is much cheaper than WD-40 and readily available at any Home Depot or Paint and Hardware store. WD-40 is a blend of mineral spirits along with some other ingredients, but it`s the mineral spirits that will help dissolve the house paint. If it`s water based paint, then like someone suggested, hot water and soap along with clay should take care of it.

I used stoners tar and paint remover and finished with WD-40:)

I think to save a step just go with what every body else has said.

WD-40 is working, but slow going. However, the rocker sills are covered in a rubberized paint and the latex is not coming off. Anyway, I`ll keep scrubbing...

Some traffic paints have rubbery compounds in the mixture. If you have some Coleman Lantern Fuel this may work pretty good. It`s not so strong that it will attack the paint but definitely don`t let it sit on there for an extended period and you will need to polish and wax when done.

If it is latex, apc or a degreaser should loosen it up, then pressure wash that should do the trick, then clay if needed
