Did this one yesterday. The owner warned me it was bad, but I figured, cmon, I`ve done some pretty bad cars, how bad could it be. Boy was I wrong, lol. It was bad! The owner was a really cool kid from ny who had purchased the car pretty much in the condition I saw it in. He, and I, wanted to shoot the previous owner for letting it get this bad. The hood, roof and trunk suffered the worst with extremely bad contamination, etching, scratching, etc. An area of the hood had been keyed too. Sides of the car were also in bad shape, but didnt have as much fallout for obvious reasons. Lots of oxidation as well. Basically, you name it, it had it.

Anyway, I think I pretty much met the limit of the pc on this car. This exterior job came in at just under 7 hours, 2+ hours of which was just the first couple passes of ssr2.5 around the car. I really need to step it up and learn how to effectively and safely use a rotary. I`m making that my mid/end summer goal.

\

So heres how it went down:

apc/citrus prespray

wash

clay (use my whole 200g bar on this :( )

rewash

ssr2.5 on yellow and/or green edge pad depending on area

ssr1 on blue edge

ex

I was eager to take pics initially and during the ssr2.5, but after realizing how much time I was wasting, quickly decided to avoid the pics until I was done.

I stopped taking pics at this point until I finished b/c I was moving really slow. Sorry for some poor after shots, but I didnt want to pull it outside until the owner got there b/c it was raining by the time I finished. I was getting poor lighting w/ the bay door open as you can tell.

Great turnaround. It looks awesome. Honestly though, it reminds of the line from Gone In Sixty Seconds of "Who pays to restore a Cadillac Eldorado?".

Well if you`re gonna drive it, it might as well shine! Great job, tell the new owner not to wash it with steel wool like the last one did!

Nice! I`m impressed at the level of correction/time you got with a PC... I`m pretty good with a rotary and a car like that would have taken me atleast 6 hours... via PC, like 3 days.

If you want to learn to cut with a rotary, try starting with Optimum Polish and an Edge green wool pad... it`s the smoothest combo out there. If you want to try finishing with a rotary, LC black and FPII is also a great introduction.

Thanks :) I`ll definitely give those combos a shot once I pick up a rotary. I`m still debating which one to get though. Do you think I should go w/ one over another?

I`ve got a Makita and it`s a real workhorse, but if I had to do it again, I`d get a Metabo. As long as you don`t do any gelcoat work, the Metabo has plenty of power, and the weight difference would really save your arms on the side panels (ask me how I feel after a black Navigator or Suburban :))

Great work Chris. I felt for you then entire detail when you called and told me how bad it was. The transformation is amazing. :woot:

You must have been hearing the sound of the PC in your sleep.

I think it holds a special sentimental value lol.

Good work. Those cars are the ones that they make good detail guy like you for.

A whole 200g clay bar just on THAT car? Boy, then it was beyond bad! Turnaround was excellent! Great Job!

yep... amazing huh? I never thought that would happen. Here is a pic of the bar after only doing a small, maybe, 1x1 section of the hood.

***sorry, I forgot to resize that pic. I`ll resize and put it back up a little later***
