Finaly used my rotary!

It was alot of fun and alot to learn, alot more than i thought anyways.





Practice vehicle: 1996 GMC Jimmy- The fiance and my "beater"

Sorry but i couldnt get any "befores". I did a "quicky" light polishing on this truck last fall with the PC, 4" pads and megs #80. There where still alot of imperfections but i was having trouble getting my camera to pick them up. I also didnt get any full vehicle outside shots since it was raining. Dosent really matter, this thing is pretty busted up so there isnt much to look at.



After prepping the paint for polishing i used:

Makita 9227

edge2k light cutting pad and megs DACP

edge2k blue polishing pad and megs #80

These pics are immediately after the last polishing step so there is no wax/sealant on the paint in these pics. Later i applied EXP.



I used the pyramid technique, start at 600-1200-600, did that for both polishing steps.

I inspected the paint with halogens, flourscents, incondescents and xenon light and couldnt find any holograms. I mean i did make a few but i fixed them as i found them.



Things i learned that worked for me:

Move the rotary WITH your body and NOT WITH your arms.

Keep the rotary square to your shoulders and close to the body.

Hold onto the head of the rotary and not the bail handle.

Choke up on the trigger end and squeeze the triger with ring finger or middle finger.

Work small sections at a time.

Spur pad often.

Clean pad/change pad when its to "soaked" to spur

DACP sucks, does great work and has been my staple polish with my PC but i cant get the hang of it with the rotary. Cant waite till i use it up and get into my Optimum line.

Stay away from edges with any cutting pad and aggresive product, kinda a no brainer IMO.







Question/s:

I was going over edges with the Edge2k Blue and megs #80, am i pretty safe going over edges with light abbrasive combo`s like this? Didnt seem to hurt anything :nixweiss

Great job on your first time using the rotary! Before pictures or not, the results speak for themselves! I`m still waiting for mine to arrive but I hope I have as good of luck as you did! Hope you continue to enjoy using it!

Great work! If you are looking for some great rotary polishes, try out some menzerna and optimum. They both work great via the rotary and with a polishing/finishing pad will finish hologram free.

Actually there isnt really many plastic parts on this truck.

The only plastics are the front bumper which is smashed up to much to polish and the rear bumper which is in such bad shape it was worth polishing.

I do plan to use it on plastic parts but i wont use anything more aggresive than a polishing pad and a light polish and wont go over 1200rpm.

I forgot to mention, i avoided splatter by putting 2-4 pea sized dots on the pad and then i "bloted" it on the section i was going to polish, no sling at all. Im not sure why people lay down beads or lines on the panels, doing it that way was sling city for me.

Great work Coupe...looks real nice...actually DACP is a nice product with the rotary..but is very temper mental...it seems like it is weather dependent...lol...likes cool dry weather..once its humid and warm forget it....plus you have to brush the pad after every panel to get it to work good...



I do the edges with a lite polishing combo..but I make my pass a little faster..and feather the trigger speed..seems to work for me....I try not to run the edges with any thing aggressive...if I have to I will do them with a PC....I have smoked paint on a test panel doing it so I do not hit any edges with aggressive combos...



Now thats just me....

Thats basicly what i did. I did the heavy cutting on the inside of the panels and got as close as i could to the edges. Then i did the whole truck with the blue finishing pad and #80, i went over edges at no more than 1200 and made my passes faster. Worked great, glad im not the only one.



I did do the window pillars with my PC and 4" pads though and other smaller areas i couldnt get to with the rotary.

Thats what sucks about detailing for money, your rides get pushed aside until you have time.

Noting that I`ve never used the Edge pads....generally the edges have less paint on them and what is on there gets worn down faster than the paint on the rest of the vehicle. So you`re smart to be careful. But I`ve used my rotaries with more aggressive combos than that on some edges and been fine. You just can`t assume/generalize that it`s OK, you have to look at `em and then decide how lucky you feel. Do enough vehicles and I bet you`re gonna have an "oops" no matter what, so erring on the side of caution will minimize such eventualities.



I`ve used the same stuff on plastic panels as on the rest of the vehicle and been OK, even with H-T EC/orange pads. Just remember that plastic conducts heat differently from metal- you have to be more careful to avoid overdoing it. Your plan to stick to mild combos and moderate speeds is probably a good idea.

The thing is i dont see any other way to do edges other than by hand, PC or Cyclo. Yet i see threads all the time where people used nothing but a rotary and made no mention of doing anything else.



I did actually burn pain on my fiances truck, it was on purpose, i wanted to see what it took. I got some decent pics of it :lol

I do edges and i drive an Acura (thin paint baby) i was fine with it, i think if your carefull and dont spend to long/to many passes on those areas then you`ll be alright (why i plan on buying a paint thickness gauge, i dont even get paid yet lol just love doing things properly)



I finally got to use my rotary this weekend (had it for a couple months) thought it was gonna stop snowing but didnt then it rained so i finally did it this weekend, i did cause holograms at first then use the triangle technique (works great) and use such little polish that my brain went crazy trying to figure out how such little amounts would work.



Nice job on the truck man amazing how quickly the rotary works isn`t it?
