Hello guys. My 1999 Honda Accord ex stock rims are starting to rust around the edges. One of my relatives has a 97 rim made of the same thing( i think alluminum) and it still looks perfect.

I don`t think it is supposed to be rusting.

here are some pics.

the 2nd and third pic shows the rust close up.

Anyone know why this is rusting? Also Does anyone know how to clean it off and protect it?

the dark ring inside of the rim isn`t rust; it can be rubbed off

It`s the little spots on the outer surface of the rim that is the rust. Pics 2 and 3 show that close up.

The clear paint on them was damaged in places allowing the corrosion to happen.

You could get the wheels refinished, or replace them.

The second picture is brake dust. Those rims are clear coated. When the clear coat fails, the aluminum is exposed and starts to tarnish. Refinishing is about all you can do. You may be able to find a set of used rims that look much better.
