I was doing a car this weekend (BMW X5) and after spraying the wheels with Megs WB I noticed that the rotors were dripping some of the brake dust off of them. I hosed them down, finished the rims and then the rest of the car. When all was said and done and I was taking the "after" pics I noticed that the rotors were orange! What gives? Will this wear off when they apply the brakes? It looked to me like it was residue leftober from the wheel cleaner......anyone?

Yes it`s normal and will wear off once the brake pedal is applied while driving.

yep that will happen

it`s just surface rust and will go away

after the brakes are used

Don`t worry, it`s just surface rust which even happens if you just spray some water on them. Happens all the time when I wash my X5, and also my previous 325CI.

rotors with zinc in them don`t do this, which is one of the reasons why when it was time to chose a brake kit for the tC, i went with stoptech. all their brake rotors are of a zinc alloy... so i get no rust whatsoever when the rotors get wet :)

stoptech (and other BBK makers) use the zinc coating (the gold stuff) on the hats and vanes, but it gets eaten off the braking surface the first time you touch the brakes. Your rotors are just iron.
