To remove embedded contaminants in the paint. This might explain it better. http://www.danase.com/usingclaybar.html

Also great for removing tough tar and tree sap and such.

Here`s a good test to see if you need to clay... stick your hand in a sandwich bag and run your hand across the paint, If you can feel anything other than smoothness, you need to clay. Claying is just one of the steps that is mandatory for a great finish. After you are done , do the sandwich bag test again and feel the difference :getdown ...You can get clay at any online detailing distributor or at your local Kragan or related Auto parts place.

You can find many answers by downloading the detailing guide or simply by clicking learn on the top of the page. There are also many threads that cover clay. You can use the "search" function to find answers.

Most clays are made by the same manufacturer, since the demand on clay isn`t too high. You should be fine on any branded clay. Only difference is the grade you want (extra fine, fine, medium).
