"Is it alright to use a backing plate the same dia. as the pad?? I thought it was safer for the backing plate to be smaller?"

Anyone?

There`s a much greater risk of the plate coming in contact with the paint. You can do it. But it ain`t recommended!

I have been using 6" PBs with 6.5" pads for quite some time now. No problems at all and the larger BP spreads pressure more evenly over the pad.

I think it`s personal preference. I like a bigger backing plate that can spread the pressure more evenly especially when working with an orbital. As long as the backing plate doesn`t come in contact with any paint then you`ve got nothing to worry about.

Ive always used a 6" with any pad, except the 4" pads, then I obviously use a 3.5".

6" plate with 7.5" pads, the plate fits perfectly inside the notice and is almost centered everytime.
