First post to Autopia, really love the forums here! Question is, what leather conditioner is best for the BMW Merino leather (2006 M5)? It is a soft, but dry-feeling leather from the factory, black in my case.

I have used Leatherique on my other cars, and like it. But, I am worried about changing the gloss. The seats are a very non-gloss flat black originally. I would like to maintain that appearance.

Appreciate your advice.

welcome from a fellow bmw owner.

since your car is brand new, you cant go wrong with the cleaner/conditioner the dealer sells IMO.

I have used the Lexol line of leather products, cleaner and conditioner on my wifes e46 w/ black leather, I know its a different grade but I think it gives the look you are after. Its not glossy but it does restore that new deep black color to the leather. Another product I have used on the 46 is the griots leather conditioner, same results but with a pleasing leathery scent, compared to the IMO unscented lexol products. I dont think you can go wrong with either of these both are super easy to use, and the lexol is available about anywhere.

Four Star makes a great leather conditioner.

You might want to give CG`s Pure Leather Conditioner a try. Cleans and leaves a leather scent behind. Won`t make your seats slippery or shiny. Just does what you want it to and does it very well!

Todd, do some searching...there has been a lot of discussion on Leather Conditioners in the past.

BMW Merino leather (2006 M5)?

It is a soft, but dry-feeling leather from the factory,

What the heck is "Merino" leather? Is that anything like Chrysler`s Corinthian leather marketing of the circa 1970`s? :D

You might try Zaino leather conditioner #10 and cleaner #9 it is fantastic products can not go wrong. The smell of #10 is out of this world and has great matte finish.

A 2nd vote for CG Leather Conditioner...It`s a great product along with the Leather Cleaner as well. Very low gloss and very soft touch.

BMW does use very good leather (especially Nappa, although it lacks durability), but their names sound kind of silly. I think the BMW "Montana" leather, which I`m pretty sure is sourced from Europe.

To answer your question, as a standard cleaner I`d use Griot`s, which cleans well, leaves a flat finish and smells great. Every 6 months, use Leatherique Conditioner and follow that with their cleaner. A slight gloss will remain, which can easily be removed by using Griot`s.

Little OT, But the leather in our 93 740il at 150k miles, looked much better then the leather in our 99 740il. Both cars got leatherique.
