When my wool wash mitt is machine washed and dried, it gets hard like a piece of cardboard until I soak it again... Is this common?

As was mentioned, if you`re referring to the leather inside, yes, it gets pretty stiff. If you`re referring to the outside, no, it shouldn`t be like that. If the outside is stiff, it probably isn`t rinsed clean.

Yeah, the backing stiffens up, and sometimes the outer nap does too. As long as it softens up when it`s immersed in wash solution I wouldn`t worry about it. For peace of mind, you could try the CD test, but again, do it when the mitt`s wet with shampoo mix, not dry.
