Okay, so I`ve used the backing plate 5 or 6 times over the past year. Tonight I was applying some polish to the vette, and the pad flew off, so I tried placing it back on the backing plate, and wouldn`t stick. Is this normal for the backing plate to melt? I wasn`t using pressure, just working for quite awhile.

Also, is there a place to pick one up local to Virginia Beach? I have my girlfriends mom garage until Sunday (she is moving) and I need to get one quick. Can I go to a paint supply shop and find one?

Here are the pics.

Sorry all...guess I should`ve used the "search" function! :dig

I found this is not the first time this has happened. The other thread something about not being a sonus plate and that`s why it melted, but mine is a sonus plate I bought last year with pads though this website.

I dunno...I don`t have any problem with the Sonus-type plates, only the Meguiar`s.

Very odd. I use a sonus plate too and haven`t had any issues after probably 50 polishing sessions. I`m not sure where you would find one locally, I know I wouldn`t be able to but the US market may be different.

I would try going to your local PBE store.

wow...I`m still on my original backing plate after two years! I suppose if you get really desperate, you could always have autogeek or cma next day another bp to you.

What is PBE?

Paint and body equipment store. Look in your yellow pages for Automotive Paint. You`ll want a store that mixes paint for body shops (unless you actually have a detailing store in your area). The PBE stores usually have some kind of backing plate, maybe not a flexible one, but one that is usable. Some auto parts stores get into that kind of paint and/or body work equipment and may have one. Make some calls and ask if thay have velcro backing plates for Dual Action polishers.

Ive had the one that came on my makita for 3 years 100+ polishes without any melting. Does anyone know who makes the makita one(if other than makita)? Im sure you can find one local at a professional detailer distributer.

I have had the same Meguiars backing plate on my PC since around 99--never had any issues.

Anyone know what causes that? That looks like some *severe* heat build up!!!!!
