View Full Version : wash mit? natural seasponge? what to wash with?

Right now I have a meguiars deep pile chenille wash mit....and it`s not that deep. It`s the only thing I have tried since becoming an autopian. I feel like there should be way more chenille threads on the mit. What do you guys use? How does chenille compare to natural sea sponges?

I personally use a natural sea sponge. They last forever, and every bit of dirt seems to rinse out of them. I also have not experienced any scratching or marring with a sea sponge. I have also used most other types of mitts and brushes, but like sea sponges much better.

I like and use the sheepskin mitts, very soft and absorbent, and not much dirt stay`s attached. I have used that lambswool or whatever they call it from Meg`s, and I think it`s a piece of junk.

i use seasponge and sheepskin washmitt, depends on what im doing. if the car just needs a light washing i use the seasponge, but if its heavily soiled i will use the washmitt. The seasponge is great (nice and soft) but its ability to clean isnt that high IMO.
Both have there places in my arsenal, good for differnet things :)

Where are you guys getting your sea sponges? I have one from Autogeek and it is rather small.

I picked one up from AG a while back. It`s 11 inches across and about 24 inches around, kinda of a dome shape. It`s a little bigger when damp. They take a little effort to clean well initially but I`ve used them for years and still like them.

I had one of those, but it didnt last to long for me. I have tried the Griots, Sonus, and Excel. Out of those 3 my favorite is the exceldetail sheepskin.

Mine seems to be holding up well. It doesn`t shed much. I wash it in the gentle cycle with Woolite and then air dry.

I use the TOL Sea Sponge, which I really like...very nicely-sized, good pore distribution, etc. I seem to go through wash soap much quicker using the sponge, though. I`m not sure if other people have had this same experience.
Also, more of an esoteric observation, but I sense that the washing experience is more personalized using the mitt. There`s a better feel when washing over the car using a mitt compared to a sponge. The sponge feels a tad more mechanical. I still love my sponge, though.

i got my seasponge from TOL as well. I believe they average them to 18-20" long.
also i use sheepskins from Excel as well, love them, especially the heavy duty ones :)

okay, last nite i ordered a TOL sea sponge...i think i`ll order an excel sheepskin today, use the sponge for light jobs, and sheepsking for soiled jobs

Well, since you asked for opinions, I don`t really like mitts...always seems like you have them on your hand when you don`t want, and off when you do. Some people like to hold the mitts instead of putting their hand in--I don`t like that either.
I like the wash pads, I have all kinds: cotton chenille loops, split chenille, looped and straight MF. There seem to be no good OTC cotton chenille pads anymore, they are all split fiber and lint like crazy, not even sure all of them are cotton. I bought this one from Autogeek (http://www.autogeek.net/chenwaspad.html) although I haven`t used it yet. This one from Detailer`s Paradise (http://www.detailersparadise.com/View.asp?ProductID=376520031042541%2D1225212614049 ) looks pretty good. My current preference is MF pads, Autogeek`s/SMP`s Bone (http://www.autogeek.net/the-bone.html) is ok, better now that they lowered the price--mine split open on the first wash. My current favorite is the Meg`s QD Pad (http://www.meguiars.com/?specialized-tools-applicators/Microfiber-Quik-Detail-Pad) . It`s a little smaller and more flexible, gives you a better feel for the surface as well as getting into smaller spaces. Throw it in the wash, available locally, sometimes at clearance price.

Just make sure you clean it well once you get it. Tap the loose coral sand, shells, shrimp out of it. It will undoubtedly have some in it. Run it through the washer set to cold with no soap a couple of times and you should be good to go.
