rookie question.
what exactly is meant by compound or polish breaking down? what should i be looking for?

polishes when first applied have a harsh initial cut into the paint. the abrasives are fresh and new. As the polished is worked into the paint "breaking down" occurs. This is where the abrasives in the polish become finer and finer (due to be ground against the paint) until they no longer do anything.
