PC or Flex and waxes?

Ok, I am new to detailing and I have been looking at purchasing a kit to get me started. Should I get a kit with the PC or the FLEX polishing? If I don't get a kit and just D/A polisher are there waxes that you all recommend for a beginner. I have been on the forum for a while now looking at different waxes and pads and it is a little overwhelming. I have no idea what to purchase to get me started. So any help would be appericated.

To give you an idea what I have to practice on... I have about 4 cars in different stages that I can practice on. They range from highly oxidized car with a ton of swirl marks to a 03 vette with minor marring. I would like to practice on the highly oxidized car first since it is a older car.

Thanks,

John

Although PC is an (almost) damage-proof machine, it doesn't do as much correction as the Flex can. On the other hand, the Flex, if not used properly, can cause damage. I would recommend the Flex because you have a greater ability to do correction and will probably be enough until you're ready for a rotary.

Thanks for the info guys! I will go with the FLEX! How do I go about not killing the paint? Not keeping it in the same place for a long time? I have watched a number of videos on the PC and it seems straight forward. But I would like to hear some quick tips on how to use the FLEX from everyone.

Also, what type pads and waxes should I get for my first detail? Are there any standards ones I should focus on purchasing for my first detail?

Once I order all of this stuff I will post before pics of the car for some pointers.

Once again I appericate the help!

Watch the videos on using the PC and a lot of the same concepts apply to the Flex. However, you can just speed up your passes a bit. A lot of it is just experience and getting a few cars under your belt. Start out with the Flex on about a speed 4-5 to get a feel for it. If you're dealing with harder clear, then move up to a 6. I usually do 2x2 sections going right left right, then up down up, then throw in a diagonal for good measure. All these I do with some pressure on it. Then I lighten up pressure and do another pass getting maximum spinning out of it, and then gear down to about a speed 4-4.5 for a clean-up pass or 2. A lot of it just depends upon the car, polish, pad and speed.

As for pads, I've been a big fan of the Erasure pads from Excel Detail. Actually, I just received about 4 more white ones, 2 more orange, another red, and a couple of their 5.5" pads to test out. I was able to pick up a 5" backing plate for my Flex. The standard size BP on it is 5.5", so any pad 6" or bigger would work, but wouldn't go above 6.5". As for polishes, I started out with Menzerna with my PC. Now, it seems the Flex and Menzerna polishes are a match made in heaven.

Also, on pad quantities, order more than 1-2 of each pad. Depending upon yoru polish, it will start to "cake" up on the pad. I like to use 1 pad per 1-2 panels on the car. Make sure you give them a good cleaning (do a search) after using and they'll last you quite a while.

Best of luck, and let's see some pics!!!
