5 Way Wax Test / Blind Survey

    Hello Autopia!!!

I was doing a test for myself, and after viewing the video I made of the coin-op self service car wash, and how the water was behaving, I got curious as to what others would think. Although some of the waxes behaved in a way I expected, others did not.

I prepped the hood of my daily driven Yaris for this 5 way test by sectioning it off. The hood hasn`t been waxed in about 8-9 months. Either way, I prepped the surface with Griot`s Paint Prep.

There are five waxes, ranging from an inexpensive option, to one that is moderately priced. Nothing too fancy here (no Fuzion, or Souveran). A couple of OTC waxes. All five were easy to apply, and easy to remove. Some more so than others, but that part is expected. Two were liquid waxes (one may be considered more of a sealant hybrid?) and the other three were pastes. None required a chisel and hammer to remove.

That`s all the info you guys get for now. I`ll disclose the identities of the five waxes later, and possibly do a mini review of each as well, if the interest is there from you guys. Like I said, I`m quite curious to see what you guys would think, especially in a blind survey sort of way.

So, let`s label these as Wax 1, Wax 2 and so on. Starting from the PASSENGER side of the hood, that will be Wax 1. I`m doing it this way, because the video I`m posting is *facing* the car, so "1" would make more sense on the left, which is the passenger side.

Here`s how the hood was broken down:

Here`s roughly how they line up,when facing it, and for identifying 1 through 5. (Thanks Angus)

An outside shot, taken about 8am PST. Even in person, it was very difficult to see differences, if any, between how they finished out. Only one left the black hood at about the same color as when I started. The other four made the black just a tad bit darker. And only from *one* angle was I able to separate that one wax from the rest.

Another outside shot, from a different angle.

And here is a 2+ minute video showing "water behavior" on the test panel (the hood). It goes from 2 low pressure water action, to 1 high pressure water, followed by 1 high pressure SOAP, and then the after video of the spot free rinse. Unfortunately, my finger didn`t press the button hard enough to hit record for this last part.

If the video isn`t embedded, can someone please make it so? Thank you!

So here`s the poll part of it: Which of these five waxes would *you* want to use on your car?

I hope you all enjoy participating in my little test here. Thanks

(And thanks for taking the time to read through this and viewing)

    UPDATE: 08/25/15 - Waxes are revealed ---------------------------------------------------------

So here you go, gentlemen, the waxes....

    Wax 1 - Meguiar`s Ultimate Liquid Wax
    Wax 2 - Chemical Guys Pete`s `53 Paste Wax
Wax 3 - Malco Cherry Flash Liquid Paste Wax (the ringer of the group?)
Wax 4 - Blackfire Midnight Sun Paste Wax (Where`s the love for this one!?!?!)
    Wax 5 - Meguiar`s M26 Hi-Tech Yellow Paste Wax

As mentioned, all of these were easy to apply. All were easy to remove.

Cherry Flashwas surprisingly VERY easy to use. Being a liquid, it went on easy. I applied it first, and removed it last. It had hazed, and then some. But, was still very easy to remove. In a prior test, I waxed the whole Yaris before I started removing it. I feel it`s very forgiving, especially to someone with little waxing experience (In other words, you won`t be punished like you would with Collinite). No idea if it would stain trim, as I stayed clear of any trim.

Midnight Sun was the other surprise in the bunch. Being the most expensive, I expected a bit more from it. I purposely set this one next to the Cherry Flash to compare them on more of a *side-by-side* basis.

The test panel will go through it`s usual daily driven routine. The Yaris will be washed every Wednesday and I`ll be keeping an eye on things. I do expect the Cherry Flash will diminish at a faster rate than the others. This is based purely on the fact that it was so inexpensive. Yes, that`s a bad way to judge a wax.

I do plan on following up, maybe monthly, with posts on this thread.

    Thank you all that participated.

    SORRY guys!!!

I wasn`t sure if my settings for the poll would work. So before I added the text and pics, I set up the thread. It should all be working now!

    HAVE FUN

Gearhead, I think I got it down. Thank you.

That was kind of weird how #2 seemed to hold on to the water beads but shed the soap so fast. I selected 3 but would have been happy with 1 or 3. Both shed water fast, held the soap well and looked near dry after the spot free rinse.

The product left of center as you`re facing it sure handles the soap test differently than the ones next to it.

2 all the way. Looks like the water is beading up faster and the soap did as well.

I am wililng to guess 1 is Fuzion.

Unfortunately, I ordered the Fuzion thru the sale AFTER this test was started. Perhaps another round of other waxes can be done?
