Grandpa`s 1951 Packard

In 1951, my Grandfather purchased a brand new Packard 300 Touring Sedan. I had heard about it from my Mom but I wasn`t around to see it (he sold it before I was born). I did some research on it and it looks like it was a pretty cool car. The thing was a beast! 3,900 pounds! Lets just say I would HATE to get T-boned by a car like this driving ANY modern day car!

Anyway, when my brother and I were cleaning out my Mom`s house after she passed, we not only found a few pics of the car but the original bill of sale, a hub cap and the hood ornament from the car. I remember seeing the hood ornament as a kid but I hadn`t seen it in years and to be honest I had totally forgotten about it. I framed the bill of sale as well as a photo of the car and mounted the hood ornament on the base of an old car trophy I had. The stuff is in my garage and every time I see them I think of my Grandfather. He was a WW 1 Vet and just an awesome dude. He helped me bait my fish hook and to this day I still remember that.

Anyway, I thought you guys might find this interesting.

Very cool, thanks for sharing! There`s no denying cars are better than ever today, but man they just don`t hold a candle to the styling of years past. The designs were just so beautiful. That hood ornament is awesome

I agree. The car is a work of art. The hood ornament is solid metal, REAL chrome (plated) and weighs about six pounds. Nowadays it`d be 100% plastic...

Great story and very nice to have something to always remember your grandfather. I love seeing those receipts and invoices. A lot of times when adjusted for inflation those older cars are actually crazy expensive.

This will make you laugh. My hourly wage today adjusted to a 1951 wage is under $2.75 per hour

$3264 was a helluva lot of money in 1951. A premium price for a premium car. The hood ornament might bring that sum now.

If you ever saw the movie "Then Natural" with Robert Redford.... My friend owned the Packard Limo that was used in the film.

When we went out to dinner wit it, we would take the radiator cap off, replace it with a regular cap and take the real on inside with us. Then return it to it`s proper place when ready to leave.


They always parked it up front of the restaurants.
