How to know when the detaining bug has bitten you hard...

I`m currently on business in Phoenix, caught my Hertz rental in the sunlight and first thought was "Boy, that has a lot of swirls in it"

Think that`s bad? I did a one step cleaner-wax on a rental because I couldn`t stand all the embedded dirt (the car was white) and swirls anymore.

LOL! And then you contemplate actually removing the swirls...listing the products, time and tools you would need to use before that small voice in your head talks you out of it because it`s not your car.

Yep, sounds like your in the yellow/orange detailing bug level.

Re: How to know when the detaining bug has bitten you hard...

A few years ago when a vehicle got wrecked, I got a new black Suburban insurance-rental that I was gonna have for a looong time during nice weather (summertime). Utterly trashed paint, just what you`d expect. To me it screamed "I don`t know or care from how my vehicle looks! I`m an careless idiot!"

So I corrected it. Yep, the whole thing (well, the whole exterior, didn`t do the jambs/wells/etc.) to Autopian standards. Took quite a few days, starting with wool pads on the rotary (this was before today`s products).

WHY?!? Because it was gonna be my daily dog-hauler for weeks and driving it as-is would`ve been like going around wearing dirty clothes. I ended up having it for over a month and was glad it looked OK.

Would I ever do something like that again? Probably not, haven`t done it since. These days I don`t really care what other people think about my vehicles.

But back when EuroCar Service was still turning wrenches, I`d always detail their Service Loaners as a favor to the family and they were always appreciative. That wasn`t about me, it was about doing right by some people I esteemed.

Even beyond that you felt the need to share it with the other like-minded weirdos.

I know I got the detailing bug bad because I woke up from a dream where I was waxing my car (I could still smell the wax)

I also got a loaner last month (Nissan Versa) from the body shop and it was swirled so badly it was almost a style, I was going to buff them out, but my wife said no and vetoed that idea

Yellow borderline Orange, Luckily I have been able to keep my mouth shut. Every time I see a family members or friends car and I think give me that car for the weekend and I can make look like new. Thank god I keep my mouth shut I have enough stuff to do I don`t need to be working on people who wont even appreciate it`s cars.
