    Unhappy Isopropyl Alcohol in QD`s?

Hey folks, I thought I`d run my question by you guys. I`d appreciate your input. I took advantage of the 50% off sale of AutoMagic products at SparkleAuto.com. I purchased a gallon of their carnauba fortified QD for like $6 and a couple other items for a total of $17 or so.

What`s cool is the label on the jug has the MSDS sheet and lists the ingredients like you see on a food label. No other manufacturer seems to do this that I know of. You usually have to request it or go hunt it down.

What wasn`t cool was reading that one of the ingredients is isopropyl alcohol. Do QD`s normally contain alcohol? I realize it`s a bulk product manufacturer and maybe a lesser quality QD as a result.

My question is, given that ingredient, will it remove LSP`s or glazes if I use it during a detail? It says it is a great in between washes product. Will I be in essence removing my paste wax with it when I do a final wipe down after I apply the wax?!

I bought it because I only use carnauba products and thought this would be nice to have. After all, I figured for $6 it was worth a shot.

Or, do many other QD`s have it in them and I shouldn`t be too concerned. I looked up the MSDS on Meguiar`s QD`s and they don`t list it.

    Any ideas or comments?

I have included 2 800x600 images for you guys to see. Sorry it`s a tad big, but I wanted you to read the words. I like the label - very informative! Hope you can read it.

:bawling: Really? Not even something similar in other QD`s? A solvent of some sort?

I guess it can be good for a wipe down after a polishing prior to applying a wax. This way the LSP stays fully intact on a freshly cleaned surface.

Oh well, it was only $6 for the gallon :whistling

    Smells like bananas! :eat:

Their label doesn`t state the percentage of alcohol contained in the product. It merely lists it as an ingredient and you don`t know if its concentration is only a few ppm or if it is at the percent level. Since most ingredient labels list compounds in a product in decreasing amounts, all you can really assume is their product is mostly water and the second most abundant ingredient is the alcohol.

Most here already know that an isopropyl alcohol wipe is recommended to remove polish fillers and that IPA/water approximately 1:1 will strip or compromise most sealants.

I think Steve made a good point. IMO I wouldn`t expect that this product would be to good if you are trying to get the maximum life out of your wax.

I guess as long as your LSP doesn`t mind the carnauba that may be on the surface after using this particular product. I don`t see much use in it other than as a clay lube perhaps. Maybe a wheel shiner or something.

It was 50% off in a liquidation sale, so I figured I`d try it.

(I was waiting for that comment though )

Yeah chml17l, I assume ingredients are listed in order of abundance.

Fuzz, I think you`re right. It`ll be good for claying (maybe if it doesn`t eat the bar!), wheels, door jambs, bumpers, etc... Like I mentioned in my previous post, I only use carnauba so that`s why I mentioned the post polish wipe down prior to the waxing.

I can see that a QD w/ carnauba might have a solvent as a carrier, and if it was billed as a cleaner/wax (sort of like QW+ / QD+) , but not alcohol

Auto Magic doesn`t have much info about it on their web-site, but what they do have is here.
They sure do sell a lot of products to be making crap. I really doubt that it is going to damage your paint and probably won`t hurt the wax, either.

Of course, it isn`t my vehicle either.

I found their MSDS sheet on their website and if you scroll down you`ll see the amount of alcohol.

I`m no chemist. Can somone translate and see how much is in there?

Thanks! I think this should clarify.

Wouldn`t the <2 for % of IPA indicate less than 2% by weight?
    Doesn`t seem like much.
Try it on your washing machine or dryer.

    Meguiar`s uses:

    -PNP Glycol Ether
    -Propylene Glycol

in all of their detailer sprays.

"Both compounds are used to make antifreeze and de-icing solutions for cars, airplanes, and boats; to make polyester compounds; and as solvents in the paint and plastics industries."

    Re: Isopropyl Alcohol in QD`s?

Thanks Sean, I saw the MSDS sheets on Meguiar`s website. That`s the first place I checked.

Less than 2%? Given all the other stuff in there, I don`t think that`s a lot. But, I don`t know how much it would take to comprimise LSP`s.

What I`ll do is try it on half the car I wax this weekend and leave the other half untouched. I`ll check back in a month after a hand washing and see how the rinse water reacts with the surface.

Thanks Charles! I`m going to QD the washing machine. I have clothes in the dryer now.

Come on people, do you really think automagic would put something out that would cause more damage then good? Lets not start the it cost 6$ or dealerships use it so it must be bad thing. Automagic makes quality detailing products, the alcohol is in there for some reason. You want to know more? Call your automagic rep and ask him but don`t badmouth the stuff.
