Polishing single stage paints

Any tips and advice on single stage paint polishing?

Guys- bumping this one up from the dead......I am planning on polishing the car this month when I have the time. Right now, I don`t have a whole lot in my arsenal. I have a rotary with two pads for polishing (3M) and one for a final polish (also 3M) along with a bottle of M105.

Also note that I have a DA with a few 4 inch pads as well. Are these pads going to be garbage by the time I am done polishing?

Striker- I never worry about all the pigment stains from SS, if that`s what you`re worried about.

I just want to make sure whether or not my pads will be useless after I am done polishing this car. I`m going to hit it with M105 on both the rotary and my DA to see the results. I think my PC has seen better days tho. Even on speed 5 the pad does not spin with no pressure added to it.

Striker- Sounds like it`s time for a new RO polisher.

Oh I was talking about my Porter Cable. The pads don`t spin with any sort of pressure applied to the machine.

Yeah, that`s how mine (both) are and why I don`t use them any more.` But mine *will* rotate with 3-4" pads and some applied pressure.

I guess i`ll stick with my trusty Makita. With the way this car presently looks, any sort of buffing will be an upgrade.

I find rotaries a *LOT* easier to finish out with on single stage, did it OK when I was`a kid.` Take it really easy on the edges though.

**UPDATE**

Hit one of the panels with a quick pass using M105 and my makita. The results were great. Left some marring but I expected that using the combo above. If I go with M205 and a rotary or DA, am I good with this combo?

Striker- Yeah, as long as the artifacts from the M105 aren`t too severe. Even on ss I`d want to do the final passes with the DA, but that`s just me. If you use the Makita with 205 it should almost certainly be able to clear up after the M105, but remember that the oils in M205 can conceal the sort of (presumably) minor marring you`ll be working on.

Well I have a DA and some white 4 inch pads. Perhaps ill try the M205 on this setup first.

Striker- Just be sure to get the Trade Secret Oils cleaned off so you can gauge your progress.
