    Paint thickness gauge

Hey family. Was wondering about the cheaper paint thickness gauges. Are they any good? Should i even consider on? I need one to check paint but nothing to fancy. Just want to see how much clear is left to remove a scratch. Thanks

I am happy with the CEM DT156 I have been using for a couple of years now.... its great to be able to spot excessively thin areas, or panels that have been repainted, and offers decent repeatable measuring.

Its not gonna measure individual layers of paint, but for making a go/no-go call and as a tool to help better decide on how aggressive to get when correcting, I think it a win for the price....

    Jtford95 --

For a good total thickness meter, the one mentioned above by LawrenceSA looks just like the HighLine Meter which is around $300+...
The one mentioned above is on ebay here -- CM8801FN LCD Digital Coating Thickness Gauge Paint Meter Tester Read 2 in 1 Type | eBay
Looks like a good value to me..

The HighLine II Meter can be found darned cheap.

I had Nick match another sellers price back in April. Knocked $100 of their normal price. It`s within 3% at least, depending on how you calibrate it.

    Re: Paint thickness gauge

I have an ITM FNF 01 that cost me $250 dollars and I think it`s better than the CEM`s
Can measure chrome thickness on bumper bars (real chrome) and many other surfaces coated with non paint coatings
Comes calibrated in box and never had a problem with it.

At $150 for the HighLine II, that`s about as cheap as you can find anything that`ll do what a PTG does. . (Other than one of those hand held magnets that gives you an idea if there`s too much Bondo on a panel.)

I`d say it`s money well spent.
