Summer is the season for fun and relaxing. It also happens to be when our hemisphere is closest to the sun, resulting in long days and hot temperatures. You wouldn’t go to the beach without sunscreen and you shouldn’t leave your car’s exterior surfaces unprotected. In this, the second of three Summer Care articles from Autopia-CarCare, we will look at how to quickly protect the exterior surfaces of your vehicle. With these tips, you will be able to spend more time driving and enjoying your summer!

Summer temperatures can be scathing. The heat limits the time you can enjoy working on your vehicle. The long days mean waking up at dawn or waiting until dusk to enjoy more tepid temperature. Even then, if you take too long you may run into problems. Early risers are quickly met by the first scortching rays of sunlight. Night owls will find that dusk fades to complete darkness in no time. Proper Prep Work:
In order to get the best protection and performance your automobile should be ready to accept the sealant:

If the paint is worn or lacks shine use the appropriate pre-wax cleanser to restore gloss: BLACKFIRE Gloss Enhancing Polish, Optimum Poli-Seal, or Ultima Paint Guard Prep Plus.

Proper Technique
Applying a wipe-on walk away sealant could not be easier. Each product comes with a specific applicator suited to proper application. Apply in the shade or in shelter, out of direct sunlight, to reduce the chances of product smearing.

Lightly mist the applicator with one spray of product.
Using a sweeping motion, apply a fine mist of product to the body panel. Large body panels such as hoods or tonneau covers should be treated in two different sections.
Spread into a thin, even coat over the panel using straight, overlapping motions. Wipe on, walk away paint sealants are hyper concentrated. Use as little product as possible to cover the surface. Work lightly into the surface.
Apply to paint, glass, headlights, and taillights. You can even apply to wheels if they are clean.
Much of the sealant will appear to melt into the surface, that is okay. Remaining wet spots may linger for five to fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes, lightly buff any wet spots with a clean microfiber towel to even out the coating.
Allow the sealant to fully cure for several hours before exposing to rain, water, or extreme temperatures.

Protect Your Tires and Trim:

With your paint well protected it is time to focus on your tires and exterior trim pieces. Excessive sun exposure can prematurely age rubber, plastic, and vinyl. Spraying silicon laden dressings on these pieces will temporarily restore their appearance but offers little real-world protection. To protect yourself from sunburn, you use sun block, not baby oil! Tips and Tricks for Getting The Most From Your Trim Protectant:
For exterior trim and tires we recommend applying according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The general guidelines below will help you achieve the best performance and longest lasting protection:

Clean the surfaces thoroughly. For tires use a dedicated cleaner such as BLACKFIRE Total Eclipse Tire and Wheel Cleaner. For exterior trim pieces, use a mild all purpose cleaner such as Sonus All In 1 Total Auto Cleaner Concentrate or Optimum Power Clean. Brush on with a Mother`s Detail Brush and rinse off. Allow the surfaces to dry completely.
After applying your protectant to the tires allow it set for the length of time recommended by the manufacturer. Then gently remove any excess product with an All Purpose & Wheel Microfiber Towel. This will prevent the protectant from slinging onto your paint work.
