Re: Video of Sorcery - Paintless Dent Repair - Hotbox

My mothers X3 needs upwards of $4500 in PDR because of a recent hail storm. If this could fix 95% of the dents and I could do it myself, this might be justifiable to purchase...................

I saw it on "Wheeler Dealers" on Velocity channel. It was the Chevy Luv truck episode. Ed used it on the truck and I was mystified that such technology exists. If I had one of these, I`d go looking for lightly hail damaged cars to buy.

I watched the video and with my (little) knowledge of PDR I find it disturbing. The lighting is of utmost importance in PDR. The guy that did mine had a light setup that shot out lines onto my panels and he used the lines to find and correct the dents. In the video it looks like the operator is causing the light lines to curve instead of straighten. I am not a PDR guy (nor do I play one on tv) but I would leave this to professionals. PDR guys have to go to school to learn this trade. There is an art to PDR also. $4500 for PDR? Wow! I think that is way high. I had 40 dents removed for $600. Google Dentsmart to see if you are in their area. If not, call them anyway and see if they know someone in your area.

Only 20-40 cars repaired at $50-100 per door ding, and this this would be paid for.

Door dings can be more difficult, unless there is no paint damage. Which seems to be the case of 90 percent of the (expletive) door dings I see. People just have no respect for other people`s property.

Really cool technology but I`m also wondering why the reflections of light seem to be bent afterwards.

I noticed that as well, I though it`s because the car has a slight curve. It seems to look better after being cooled down though.

Incredible technology - how does it do this ???
And remember some dents still had to be worked from the inside.
And then there was Soft vs Sharp dents...
And this does not make ALL dents go completely away like that really good PDR guy can..
Thanks for posting this up -

$4500 was on the low side, one place quoted $8k. There are a TON of dents though, at least 40 on the hood alone, she can either get the hood replaced with OEM and painted or have PDR for the same price on it, by itself. The roof needs a lot of love too, the cost of the roof is high, due to the two row moon roof, there are dents between it and the A-D pillar connectors. The front drivers fender, drivers door, drivers side passenger door, drivers rear quarter panel, by themselves have at least 20 dents a piece. Luckily they aren`t too deep, but they are everywhere.

Wow, $4500 to $8000. That is a shock. I still would give Dentsmart a call or email. The small dents come out quick and easy. If the paint has been chipped PDR won`t touch it. I had some tough dents in some difficult places and was charged $600. I sent pictures to them and was quoted $400 to $650 and they had to drive 400 miles round trip to get to me. It`s not rocket science, but it does take the right tools and experience. The machine in the video took out the dents, but the wavy light image tells me that the dent was not 100 percent removed. What make of car does she have?
