We just hit it with 2000 grit then rotary #84, then D/A #80 on it, then NXT on the D/A.

I bet that worked out really well. With the rotary and #84 I bet the 2K sanding scratches weren't a problem at all.

A rental is a good test subject for a rotary Dig that fancy side-handle with the adjustable angle!
