Taping off the plastic and trim may take a little time, but it's a lot easier than removing wax and polish after the fact. So most people here spend the time to tape up the car. 3M's blue painters tape is commonly used by everyone here.

FWIW- Groit's #3 is not an agressive polish, I don't know what surface imperfections you're trying to deal with but Groit's are a great polish but very mild, I usually use #2 and then finish with #3
