Doesn't seem like much is happening here, so I'm going to try a different route and get some 8.5" LC pads that fit the Makita 6.5" stock backing plate... both have the centering hole, so they should centre perfectly.

Its actually not that expensive. Look at this thread I copied from Detail City by a guy named Patrick Holland. You can find the link by searching for Edge 2000 pads. Thread is called "noob starting pads/compound "
