Computer problem :(

Short background. It's a home built Athlon PC that's worked flawlessly for the last 3 years I've had it. RAM has been upgraded, the works. Anyway, I put a wireless card in it because my last landlord didn't allow me to have a wired connection and complained when I said I'd run an ethernet cord through the attic to get a wired connection. The wireless card only worked intermittently at best. Fast forward to now and my new place has a wired connection for my PC and I tried to connect straight from the modem and from the router and it didn't work either way. Any ideas? I'm running Vista btw.

Re: Computer problem :(

Check your Network Connections in the Control Panel. See if it shows up as being connected, also try ipconfig in the command prompt and see if you are getting an IP address provisioned to the Ethernet port.

Also, try looking at your TCP/IP settings on the Ethernet port. Have everything set to auto if it is not already.

Re: Computer problem :(

You need to find "Network Connections" under control panel, that's an XP acronym, I believe in Vista its "Network and Internet" then "Network and Sharing Center" under control panel and find out how your PC is connecting, then you will have to configure it to use the line connection.

Re: Computer problem :(

Start from the beginning and slowly work your way through. Start with this:

Go to the Network and Sharing Center
Click on Manage Network Connections on the left hand side
Locate and Right Click on Local Area Connection, make sure its Enabled
Click on Properties, make sure all boxes have checks in them (default)
Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (should be highlighted)
Click on Properties, make sure everything is set to auto
Do the same for IPV6
Restart your computer, modem, and router (reconnect in that order)

This will set everything back to default and you should be good to go. Let me know what happens.

I used to say this until I installed Vista 64bit. Wow, what a difference, and extremely fast. Of course, you need the fast hardware to support it though.

I have to admit I have also been a firm Vista hater until I got a free copy of Vista Business through the Microsoft Academic Alliance. I figured I had nothing to lose by trying it except for my time. No big deal, I could always go back to XP if things didn't work out. So far I haven't, we have been perfectly happy with it on our main desktop at home for months now. Also managed to snag a copy of Office 2007 Ultimate for $60 through Microsoft's Ultimate Steal program....
