How to clean a MacBook?

Can anyone offer help on how to clean the dirt and grime and fingerprints off the keyboard and frame of Apple's laptops?

Re: How to clean a MacBook?

Can I recommend a little explosives

Actually I regularly use Meguiars Quick Detailer on my Dell Laptop and other electronic devices like the kids Nintendo DS, PSP, my Blackberry, etc...

It works pretty well but I am sure you would probably get similar results with your favorite spray detailer.

Spray it on a microfiber and then wipe it down, don't spray directly on the laptop.

Re: How to clean a MacBook?

I used a magic eraser on my keyboard and the area around it too and it worked really well.

Re: How to clean a MacBook?

I clean mine with Stoners glass cleaner, it gets the fingerprints and dust off. I just spray it on a MF and wipe it off. I do not use a dressing on it though. I have also used Meg's 39 on my white keyboards and mouse of my desktops done the same way.

Re: How to clean a MacBook?

What to use depends, IMO, on which macbook you've got. The finish between the white (glossy), black (matte) and pro (aluminum) is quite different.

The black tends to get the most greasy fingerprint marks, that matte finish really grabs onto skin oils, it seems. To clean my black one, I usually use some sort of grease cutting cleaning spray (like a household orange oil cleaner) and then follow it up with a damp cloth so that I don't leave any cleaner residue on the case. For the screen, just glass cleaner and a MF. That works pretty well for me, gets the case nice and clean while keeping the normal matte finish.

Re: How to clean a MacBook?

Plexus is perfect for this. Use it on the screen and body of the laptop. I have been doing this for over 3 years on my Dells and they look brand new. The screen doesn't have a single scratch. I know this because I inspect it with a Dual Xenon Brinkmann. Use your best MF.

Re: How to clean a MacBook?

for any Mac product, i would recommend at least a 2000psi pressure washer...keep the nozzle 3-4 inches from the device and have at it.

j/k.

i use canned air to clean out the keyboard and crevices on all my laptops...then simply a MF towel damp w/ plain water.

Re: How to clean a MacBook?

Thanks! I appreciate all the various answers.

i have a white MacBook and it's the matte finish around the keyboard that I need to clean. (mainly where your hand rests outside the keyboard.)

I clean the glossy screen and outside with with Stoner's and follow up with Z-CS.
I might try an ONR wipe, or an IPA wipe, or a 425 wipe, canned air, and a pressure washer.

Any tips on the magic eraser? Do you actually wet it down? I'm curious about this approach....

Re: How to clean a MacBook?

Magic eraser works great on the outside of the glossy macbooks, etc. I've used it on my iBook before.

I'd just use a damp cloth on the keyboard to get the dirt marks off if you have any. And a proper LCD screen cleaning solution - I bought some at Staples.
