Re: A Proper Shave: The Essentials of Being a Man!
I've been shaving for 50 years now. I've used straight razors, safety razors multi-blade wonders and most of the electric brands. In all the years, the best shave I've ever gotten comes from a Braun 8995. Fast, close shave, no irritation, no cuts, and easy to travel with.

Re: A Proper Shave: The Essentials of Being a Man!
My grandpa was a barber for many years and he used the old straight razor on thousands of guys including himself. He is dead now and I have his personal straight razor but I wont use it and I dont know how. I wish I would have asked him to teach me but it's to late now.
I use the Quatro razor and some cheap electric my wife bought me when im on the go. I like using the Gillette Gel shaving cream for sensitive skin. My skin isnt sensitive but it leaves your face soft and smooth with a good manly scent.

I shave, almost every day with a Safety Razor and a badger brush. It's truly one of the last things I have that's all to myself.

Re: A Proper Shave: The Essentials of Being a Man!
Shaving is the last thing I do in the shower. I use a pre shave oil and then Kiehls shave cream applied with a badger brush. I use the Gillette 5 bladed razor. It is the best razor I have used.
When I was younger I used a straight razor. I have thought about going back to using it, but for me it isn't worth the extra effort. And the extra cuts.

I'm fairly certain that laser is a completely permanent solution. It doesn't just zap the hair; it zaps the entire follicle and such so that it can never grow back, if I understand correctly. If it wasn't, I don't know how anyone could justify the enormous cost of laser treating an area that isn't super tiny.
I'm not sure about electrolysis; its an older method but I'm not sure how long it lasts. It can also leave colored spots on certain skin types.
Of course, doing this will leave you kind of screwed in case you (or your lady at the time) decides you look better with a slight scruff or light beard

Hmmm. May have to start researching the cost of doing this.

I don't think myself or any girlfriend/wife will ever want me to have a beard. The colors of my facial hair is kinda screwed up. My cheeks and upper lip are blonde, my chin and jaw line are red and my neck is brown. It would look like an odd colored rainbow growing on my face.

Re: A Proper Shave: The Essentials of Being a Man!
I've got a beard that lays down flat on my face. It makes it difficult to shave. I've found a little trick that works for me. I use a very hot terrycloth wash cloth to prep my face and soften the beard. Then, before I apply shaving cream I pull the wash cloth against the grain of the hair to get it to stand up. Works great and I get a closer shave.

Re: A Proper Shave: The Essentials of Being a Man!
As a kid growing up I have fond memories of getting my haircut in the local barber shop from an old Italian master barber. He would finish the haircut by shaving my neck and sideburns with his straight razor. Following that, he would apply an after shave called Clubman Classic by Pinaud. This stuff has a very distinctive aroma that brings back those memories vividly. You can still buy this stuff and I occasionally still use it as it evokes some of those nostalgic memories. Another plus is that my spouse loves the scent.
Any other Clubman users know what I'm talking about?
Here is a site that deals in some of the classic mens toiletries.

Merkur HD long handle with Crystal blades here. I use The Body Shop shaving cream and a Vulfix(sp?) badger brush. I'm so glad I learned how to wet shave, after the initial cost it gets pretty cheap. And it cuts sooo close, I like shaving on Sundays and not having to do it for the next 6 days.

Re: A Proper Shave: The Essentials of Being a Man!
Laser on the face can be permanant. To get it lasered you need to have your face shaved so the laser can bypass the hair and get down to the root. It will take X amount of times over the course of a year to get complete removal.
As for wet shving I use a Merkur HD 38C with Derby extra blades. The Shaving Cream Taylor of Old Avocado.

I use an electric shaver, typically daily....because I kid you not I've not shaved once in my life with a normal razor without razor burn, bumps, or some crap for 2-3 days afterward. It doesn't matter if I do it without shaving cream, or with...with a hot rag, or without...I've tried numerous razors to no avail.
Oh well...

I, too, have tried to shave with blades on several occasions and get irritation, bumps, nicks and just general unpleasantries all around. I've been using a Norelco CoolSkin for the past several years. Don't like paying for the expensive lotion cartridges, but it does a good job. My face is extremely sensitive and I have yet to find anything better. I got a freebie Schick Quattro with some cycling equipment I ordered the other day, so I may give the blade another go since it's been a while, but I already know the outcome.
