Dealer Work

I've recieved a call from the gentleman that imports vehicles from Japan as well as other countries. He asked me how many cars I could do in a day, and I replied "maybe 2 or 3".

He then goes onto explaining he's opening up a high end exotic import dealer, and would like to higher me for straight cash jobs, with no paper trails. Since this is what I'm doing already anyways, I was hoping it would be a good idea. The idea of steady, dependable work is a pleasing thought.

Anyways, he said that he doesn't want show quality work like I usually do. He wants them to be cleaned up, with almost all the swirls to be removed, but he doesn't want anything like my usual work. He wants me to do the full details for $130 a piece, with a minimum of two per day. This would be a 2-4 times a week sort of thing.

What do you guys think? The idea of guaranteed work is intriguing, but comprimising my quality isn't. Do you think its worth the sacrific?

Steve

Hey Steve,

If you have to ask the question, I think you already know the answer.

Agreed.

You could offer your services to him if he really needs them, but not on an employee basis. He'll just have to call you up to come work on a car of his whenever it's necessary, that way he can have a regular detail jockey for the low-quality stuff you don't want to do.

If taking on his cars means turning down other cars you'd get full price on, don't do it.

It really just depends on your financial situation. If someone offered me something like that even tho I would WANT to tell them that I refuse to do sub-standard work, I would have to tell them that I would tackle it for them, just because of the horrible finacial situation im in right now. In the end, your name will be on each of those cars. FWIW I know you could do a LOT better job than anyone else he could hire. One option, is to tell him, when he need something nice done the right way, to give you a call. there are diffrent routes you could take.

That's $520.00 ($130.00 x 2) - $1040.00 ($130.00 x 4) CASH for non Autopian work a week. If you take the AVERAGE (add both, divide by 2) and multiply that over a year it comes out to $40,560.00 CASH. Uh, what's there to think about?

You can do a one step wax job like Meguiar's #66 and finish off with a spray wax. Dress trim, tires and do the interior. You can still make the cars look real nice like this. Many pros here offer express details.

Plus, you can do you own business detailing on days he doesn't give you work, or like Scott mentioned, if it interferes on occasion with the ability to earn more money on your own, tell him you're booked that day.

What Spilchy said...I thought I must be missing something when everyone came out against this...when people complain about dealer work it's usually because they are getting $30...not $130.

+1, I would do it in a heart beat.

All PC work, vac, wipe down interior, etc.

I would stock up on #66, SSR2.5, and OCW.

If his name isn't being attached to it then that's all well and good.

He only wants his name put in with the quality work he does for himself, that's the issue. The money never was.

take it....like you said, its 130 a car.....do two cars a day for 4 days cash (read - no taxes)....thats 8 cars a week times say 48 weeks a year almost 50K a year.....for someone who is 17, that is more than I made waiting tables in the last two years.....TAKE IT, then save the other days to detail like you want to and put your name on those....'

also, talk to the dealer and tell him you dont want your name released as the detailer if its a concern to you. Tell him to talk to the new owners of the cars, or you talk to them, and if they want a top notch detail job on the car to contact you on your day off and you will take care of them (at your own pricing)

or dont take the job, sit around waiting for those prime jobs to appear and hope you get all the jobs you can handle....

think about it 1 car at 250, full detail all day long....or 260 for 2 cars with a quick buff and wax type deal with Megs #66 and a spray wax and interior clean up taking about 6 hours....total for 2 cars, then possibly getting those cars on your "off day" detailing regimine at 250 bucks for a good job, but you already "prepped" the car to a certain extent.....making your "full detail" work on those cars a breeze compared to if you had to do it from scratch....but the total amount you would get paid per car is 380 bucks....in a sense from the 130 from the dealer work plus the 250 for the private work.....I would take it
