Tropically Detailed: '80 Ferrari 400i from Ferrari brutto to Ferrari manifico!!!

From an ugly Ferrari to a beautiful Ferrari

Story

This thing was hammered! Period.

I have never seen a Ferrari so swirled, etched, and in need of some love. I have never gotten so aggressive with Ferrari paint. It took 2 passes with a Shegal (sp) twisted wool pad at 2000 rpm to remove the heavier marring from the soft paint. This was followed by either a Shegal fine wool or Lake Country twisted wool pad with Menzerna SIP, and finally finished by Menzerna 106ff on a Lake Country white pull...

Okay, the befores...

Some of the upper sections where a little pink and had such bad swirling that I couldn't focus the camera (even when manually focused it wouldn't pic up).

50/50's

I found out that the car was repainted, a long time ago, when the orginal owners changed the color from blue to red. It was clear coated, but the paint was still very soft and that paint was pushing 15 years old.

Passenger side of the roof...

Passenger side of the roof... You can see that driver side had been done already

Passenger side of the roof after two passes with the twisted wool and Menzerna Power Gloss at 1800-2000 rpm. The swirls are reduced, but there is defined hologramming

A pass of Menzerna SIP on a LC purple wool pad reduced the deeper marring and hologramming of the Wool/PowerGloss and finished the surface down nicely. Considering that this was 15 year old paint on a 27 year old car, I did not want to cut any further.

106ff on a White CCS pad finished the polish by removing the fine marring on the surface

Refelection of the polished hood (no lsp)

So we went from this...

to this

The rear decklid was even worse and could not be finished down as nice as the rest of the car...
Before

After the first pass of twisted wool and Power Gloss

After 106ff/white

Tools used

After 2 coats of Zaino Z5 pro, Z16 on tires, ZAIO on glass, trim, wheels, ect..

Re: Tropically Detailed: '80 Ferrari 400i from Ferrari brutto to Ferrari manifico!!!

Another amazing job Todd! These rough ones will only make you even more talented than what you are. Alot of people can detail a car, but it takes a real pro to start a car like this and finish it to a perfect finish. People also do not realize all the mental thinking that goes into a detail with which products to use and can not use, soft edges, soft or hard paint, paint temp, whether it is stock factory paint or a repaint (if it is repaint, then what kind), examination of the paint at every inch, etc., etc., etc..... You have seemed to master all of the above.

Oh, I remember that era...the "sedan" experiment. Around the time of the Maserati Quattroporte and Aston Martin Lagonda. Great work!
