2006 Dodge Ram mega cab edition

To say this one was big would be an understatement. Well as my break in detail of South Carolina I had a fellow board member contact me on this one. Two things we're said right away. The first being that he already had 2 other detailers try and get it right with no luck. And the other is that he absoultly loves this truck. It's a work truck but it's a nice work truck. Ton's of swirls in it. He dropped it off in the evening so I didn't get a chance to really see what i was in for. I could get a idea in the light we did have... So the next morning I had to take some shots.

After some ask and answer with other detailers that have delt with the ram it was pretty much a given that this clear was going to be a royal pain in the buttokies! I did have an added bonus though. The client had just purchased the new PCXP and brought it along so I could give it a try. I wanted to see what if any differences I could notice over the G110. I'll get into that in a bit.

First up it needed a bath and clay job.

There was something that I at first thought might have been tree sap. But on closer inspection it looked more like drops of blood or something. Whatever it was it washed off easily enough. Thought I was going to have to deal with a tree sap nightmare for a minute there.

The wheels and wells were dirty but nothing overly complicated here.

So gave it a good bath. Scrubbed in the wheel wells nicely. ( I have no idea what happened to my bath pics... I guess the puter monster must've ate them because I swear I took them LOL)

Then gave it a good clay bar service. He had brought up some pinnicle speed clay. Figured I'd give it a try out and see how it does. Not sure what the price mark is on the clay but it seemed to work really good. All in all nothing to horrible but it did clean up the paint nicely enough.

So all cleaned up and free of contaminants I had to decide just how I wanted to tackle this beast... What did I have in the arsenal that could tackle the rock hard clear that other detailers couldn't seem to correct.... And then it hit me like angle's singing .. (insert sounds of angle's singing)

Jake..... Use them and they will correct...... It was like a sign or something right??

So.... I was off!! Broke out the PCXP. I had a lightly used orange pad and the 105.... Let's do some correcting...

Now in all fairness to the others that attempted this mess. After getting into I understood almost immeditately why they didn't get it done right. I had to really work at this one for awhile. Almost 13 hours on the paint alone. And if your running a volume shop you just don't have that kind of time to devote to getting it done. Time was really the only thing that was going to get this one done right. But after a couple of passes with the 105 I noticed signifigant gains and started to like what I was seeing.

after 2 passes with 105

Pretty defect free.

And of course I broke one of my cardnal rules on polishing the hood with lining the wipers with towels and such to avoid a mess... Man did I ever splatter with that orange pad and the XP. But I got the results I needed

After the 205 went on the clarity just went through the roof. I just love this stuff.

After the 205 I let the paint breathe for a bit while I addressed another concern. The rear bumper plastic had some issues. Looks to me like too much silicone love happened at one point in time. I informed the owner that re-dying would be a permanent solution. But for now I would apply a coating of black wow. It tends to last for quite awhile and looks good.

before:

after:

half and half

and final outcome

Then I dressed the engine bay

Re: 2006 Dodge Ram mega cab edition

So after the details we're addressed I went back and gave her 2 coats of Danase's Paint Sealant followed by a coat of danase wet glaze. Proved to be a nice combo.

Pulled out the hyperdressing and applied it accordingly.

wells looking good again

Clear headlights are always nice.

The interior was in pretty decent shape. I extracted the carpets and the seats. The dirvers seat had a few grunge spots but nothing bad at all for a work truck. I pulled out the HD protect and went to town on all the plastic and rubber inserts.

In the end it came out quite nicely... And I got to hear angel's singing...

Owner just picked it up a few minutes ago and was happy with the results. He has a nice black jetta that I might be doing here soon LOL.

Thanks for endulging in my comical side and reading through.

Excellent work J!!!

One Q though.

Did you really apply the glaze over the sealant? Did you clean the paint after 205?

The glaze would have prepped the paint for the sealant. m2c.

Beautiful outcome!!!!

Yes the whole car got another bath after the 205 treatment. But I didn't take any pics of that. But it's how I cleared out all the compound of the cracks and wipers and such... (The pressure washer makes that much easier to deal with) And yes I sealed it up first... Then thought... ehh why not let's see if I can make it pop even more. so I put a coat of glaze on top. So the glaze was more of an afterthought than anything

Re: 2006 Dodge Ram mega cab edition

Well being the owner of this rig, I'd like to say Jake is a very nice guy to talk to and he seems very knowledgeable about his craft. It was getting dark when I picked up the truck, so I will report back my findings on his work during tomorrow's beautiful, sunshiney day!( cross your fingers Jake! )All in all the truck looks real good, he did a great job on the wheels and wheel wells, as well as some problem areas with the paint. Jake did mention the clear on this truck was pretty stout,( and I'm sure beyond my correction ability,) so I'm glad I found this site and the grade a detailers that were reccomended as well. I also checked up on his glaze after sealant application, and the danase glaze he used can be applied before or after the sealant/wax, so Jake your covered!

Thanks again for your hardwork, I'll pm you tomorrow.

JR

(sorry if my response is slightly choppy, as I am responding via an iPhone as I won't be home until tomorrow)

looks good jake. I've got one of those coming up soon, so thanks for the walkthrough!

Did you do anything to correct the chrome on the front (around the grill and the front bumper)?

Looks good man, I think I would faint if I had to work on something that massive. Those trucks are huge man, they are all over the place here. Anyway, nice work the truck looks great.
I have talked with Bob at Danase and he told me to apply his glaze over the sealant. I have done it both ways and I have nothing but good to say about it. Once again, nice work.
