Makita 9227 maintenanced, detailed, wet-sanded and resprayed

Hi everybuddy! Flexcalibur and I have definitely been through a lot of paint together and the carbon brushes were getting a bit worn so I fingered instead of just doing a brush change, I'd give him the full treatment. I always thought the Makita paint scheme was a little boring anyway and after being dropped, scraped, scuffed, slid, etc. it was looking pretty shabby anyway. So, here's what I did:

Full of polishing dust...

Dust bunnies galore!

Carbon brushes have one foot in the grave so they were replaced with the set that came with it.

Dismantling...

The handles were pre-dusted and then left to soak in a mix of APC in a salad bowl that one of my wife's friend's left here about a year ago

All of the sensitive parts taped off and trimmed with some trusty duct tape

After wet-sanding I cleaned everything with Prep-Sol

A coat of primer

The body was also cleaned with Prep-Sol and sprayed matt-black... me likey black

The copper contacts were all cleaned with a pencil eraser

The carbon brush contacts were also cleaned with an eraser. An eraser cleans the residue off of electronics without scratching it and compromising the contact area.

The guts all cleaned out

I thought the head of the Makita was a bit lame also, so I pimped it out with some chrome spray paint. OK it's not the best paint job in the world, but... limited time, I have to use this on Monday

Handles also cleaned and repainted

The head baking a bit at 250 Celsius... I can do this now because the wife's outta town

!

Left alone for the paint to cure while I head out to the lake for some R&R!

The finished product. I taped the handles up with tennis racket tape, because they provide a better grip and they're more sweat-proof!

This is probably the coolest paint resto i've seen this year. I like your style Jesse.

Jesse as I was reading this with my wife she said she would kill me if she came home and I was baking painted tools in the stove. She also thinks you had way to much Lowenbrau. Me personally would love to do this to my dewalt. I have torn them down but never painted it yet! I think this is a great idea. I'll have to wait till the next weekend my wife works. as she smacks me on the back of my head " don't even think about it. I think it looks great. this was actually a very good write up on maintance. Great Job!

I tried to do this with a very beat up dewalt i got for $20, but it was too far gone for my skills so i just got a makita. Nice work though, that polisher is looking pro and ready to go.
