ford exsplorer paint correction

ok guys here is a exsplorer which made me work a little. this one was for a dealer buddy. he said he wasn't sure if his guys could handle it. so he called me.make a long story short it was a prised auction piece. hacked up and a mess. the left fender, right quarter and front bumper was just painted and sanded and compounded my job was to fix the rest of the paint and thats it!. he said his guys can finish it up.

the process:

dawn wash twice
claymore clay bar with some lube made of water and soap
pinstripe removal
prep sol wipe down twice to see all defects
mirka 800 grit wetsand paper
3m 1500 sand paper
ardex 1000 tufbuf black wool pad rotary
m105 w0007 maroon foam cutting pad rotary
ultrafina- mlue 3m foam pad rotary
NO LSP APPLIED
ipa 91% after every step!
tools:

dewalt dw849
curtis 80 gallon compressor
ingersal rand d/a
3m tape
peanut butter
and some details brushes and microfibers, and other assorted smaller tools!

here is how she came check out all the wax everywhere now keep in mind she just came from a body shop after an auction!

now at this point i removed the stripe and did a few prepsol wipe downs and this is what i found!!

at this point i stepped back and took my hat off scratched my head and thought ***! i truely wasn't sure if i could fix this one. but i gave it my best attempt.
here is what i was seeing.

Re: ford exsplorer paint correction

ok after testing a few spots nothing was cutting threw it so i decieded just to be done with it so a few small spots were hand sanded with 800 grit and then everything was dry sanded with 3m 1500 on a d/a. now for a few pics. keep in mind i was unsure about the three panels that were just body shopped so i left them go i just sanded the rest.

Looking good there barry. I hate explorer paint. I have a 2002 and it's a PITA to deal with.

That is awesome Barry! You're like batman with the buffer....striking down evil swirls with calculated wrecklessness. I'll tell you, I've never seen someone outside of a paint shop sanding so much. But, come to think of it, I've also not seen many of those inside of the paint shop end up with as an amazing finish as you do. Kudos

thanks man. its funny you mention about wetsanding. as to i dry sanded this one, but what this does is it removes all surface defects. at this point all you have to do is buff it to a shine and refine your work. its a lot of a lot easier are bad ones to do it this way then to sit with a rotary and punish the paint! thanks my friend. those are kind words.

thank you Bob. this one was bad. i think you hit the nail on the head as why i didn't finish this one, although i did this at a lower cost then normal.
