When DIY goes wrong, 2006 VW Jetta Hood

Recieved a call from a client saying he had some bird etching on his hood which he tried to get off himself. As far as I know he tried cleaner waxes, scratch x, and even turtle wax compound or polish. Thankfully VW clear is rock hard so he didn't go too deep, as I imagine on a soft clear he could have done a lot more damage with the aggressive products. Had he brought the car to me or another detailer originally, it would have been a much simpler fix, because I was able to get the etching out with one pass, but the damage he had done took much more work.

The process:
Wash car using foam cannon with CG CWG
Dry
Clay with Meg's Mild and ONR QD
Meguiars Unigrit 3000 on scratched areas
Meg's Solo Burgandy Wool Pad and 105 to remove sanding marks
Purple Foamed wool and m105
Orange Pad and SIP
White Pad and 106ff
Black Pad and 85rd

Rewash car and Wax with Collinite 885

Here is the hood after the initial wash and after claying, looks perfect right?

Let's turn on the lights:

After compounding/polishing, nothing like black perfected:

Sorry about the circle looking things in the pics, it was dust on the camera lens.

Thanks for looking.

Wow, did he try steel wool too? Nice correction, was it a full detail or just the hood?

Sure looks like he did but I don't remember him mentioning it. The detail was just for the hood since he wants to wait till the spring to get the car perfect, it needs some body work as well. But I did wash the whole car since I couldn't let it leave looking dirty. No full shots as it was very dark by the time I was done.

I had to fix damage like that a few times. Excellent job taking care of the hood.

Looks great! I just did the same thing on a white 06 Jetta. Clear is like granite!
